Banjo pipe/bolt joint query

But the best thing to do is remove the filter on all models? That white thing...makes it easier to take the filter and clean it? So best to clean it regularly rather than remove it?

I don't have that on my bolts so they must have been taken off prior to my dismantling or have fallen off somewhere!

It's only the lower bolt that has a filter, yours may be the old type where the filter is inside the bolt not a white tip.

Old style I think people pull the filter out and leave it out.

New style I'd like to know what is best leave it in but clean regularly or remove it?

I really can't advise on that - this is what they are still selling at PSA. The thing to remember is that they expect people to maintain at least the minimum service intervals and oil changes to help ensure the oil is as clean as possible - but where the oil is not changed frequently and allowed to remain, then it is clear that this will soon clog the filter up. This has to be a personal choice really.

Is the white thing a removable cleanable filter? I'm wondering if it is worth me removing the bolt on my car to check it?

Yes it should be removable to clean.

The top pipe seal is free-floating, hence the movement. I'm told the oil pressure ensures a good seal (as long as the pipe is dead-centre straight and not twisted when tightening the bolt).

The bottom revised banjo bolt with removable filter can be left in place as long as it's cleaned regularly but the turbo manufacturer (Garrett) advise it's left out altogether.
My take on that is that unless explicitly instructed, garages generally won't know to clean it when changing oil/filters plus it's not exactly in an easily accessible place and repeated removal of the lower bolt may add undue stress to the pipe/top seal leading to premature failure.
