Xantia bumped today - much sadness
O well, it's with the insurance people now but obviously it's uneconomical to repair. Not sure what to do next

Graeme,
I would keep the car. Do you know anybody who specialises in bodywork repair as this can be fixed.

That looks like minor damage, Graeme, and something insurance should cover. If the other party was at fault and indentified, you shouldn't have a problem.

Yes, I would do the same - find a decent body repair place and pay them direct to do the job for you. Another car park hit run job was it? - the bane of all our lives.

If they were at fault i would hope the insurance would pay for the repair, it does look very fixable

Re: Xantia bumped today - much sadness
Hi guys, thanks for the responses - well one thing it wasn't a hit and run in the carpark - we just pulled in there to be out of the way of traffic. It was a kind of box junction and although I passed from her right I did so from the opposing minor road so it's kind of uncertain that they were completely at fault here (although it is noted I was almost passed before they bumped)
As for repairs they're already kind of suggestion the usual.. that it's not going to be repaired. I'll see about a quote from a body place but if you look closely it's hit in the notorious Xantia weak spot where the outer wing and the inner arch and vent area all meet (a very common rust area on Xants). I hade checked and treated the known areas twice in the last three years I've ran the car but I think the area will be really compromised now.
Maybe I'll go and see. I only paid £850 for the car 3 years ago and although I've done lots of mech work on it - I wouldn't say much has been spent. It's the rarety of it and the sentimental value of course. Hell, I only fitted a new ball joint to it last night!!

Do not let the insurance company tell you its not economical to repair, they will go on their book value, it is a modern classic, it is over 20 years old, get an independent valuation of the car

Ouch. I wouldn't have let them near it.
I suppose the question there though is was there much damage to the other car especially if there's some doubt who was at fault. In my experience insurance companies never back you up and are far too quick to go for a 50:50 blame.

Another option, let them give is a category N (formerly D) and buy it back from the insurer, then get it repaired, or use it as it is.

Re: Xantia bumped today - much sadness
Hiya the other car was barely damaged (bmw at the right in picture) she contacted me last night saying the damage is minimal and she's not going to claim. My insurance gave the option of not claiming pending the result of the 'who's fault was it ' report. I'll find out soon what's happening. I've contacted a few body shop places for quotes but will have to wait until after the bank holiday Monday.
Went out for a run today with Mrs and any time we stopped i looked at that dent it's not large but looks awful!

Hi body shop will be able to get in behind it and get most of it out before fine fettling it!
I'd get them to drop bumper while at it so can deal with it below bumper line!
But worse comes to worse you could most likely do it yourself if have the basic knowledge maybe get some help from locals?

For a piddling little bit of damage like that this might be worth a go.
