Email delivery issues

Post by xantia_v6 »

I have had a couple of reports recently of emails from the forum going into spam or junk folders. We have gone to some trouble to ensure that our email server has a good reputation, and implements currently recommended security measures, but some email providers have strange algorithms for determining what is spam.

It probably only affects one or two email providers, but I would like to get and idea of how widespread it is. If your email from frenchcarforum.co.uk is regularly routed to your spam folder, could you please reply to this topic, stating
  • who is your email provider?
  • what proportion of email (from us) is treated as spam?
  • is there any difference in the treatment of different types of message from the forum? (if you only receive notification emails, then say so)
  • how long has this been occurring?
  • have you taken any steps to correct it?
Don't bother replying if your email has always been delivered correctly.

I may later request some more comprehensive data from one or two people.

Thanks

Thanks for the report. The other reports I have seen also involved activation emails.
Can you (if you know how) forward me the email headers (called the 'source' on some email clients) for that mesage, so that I can see if there are any clues?

I am probably one of those who contacted you, several months ago about email notifications going straight to the spam folder. In spite of everything it still happens. I'll answer your questions.

who is your email provider?
what proportion of email (from us) is treated as spam?
is there any difference in the treatment of different types of message from the forum? (if you only receive notification emails, then say so)
how long has this been occurring?
have you taken any steps to correct it?

I'm with BT Yahoo.
Every notification goes to spam. Currently I have 13 emails in my spam folder - all from last week. Three are from Twitter; ten from FCF
I only receive notifications.
Three maybe four months
Many times I've clicked on "This is not spam". Also FCF is in my address book. Normally address book names don't go to spam.
Thinking that I hadn't done something wrong, I had my grandson take a look. He could see nothing amiss.

Thanks for responding again. We still need to get hold copies of some email headers which may give information on why the messages are being treated as spam. Maybe your grandson can help you extract the email headers and forward them to us?

I have received a set of mail headers from a yahoo user who reported that notifications have been going into their 'junk' folder.
Inspection of the headers showed that yahoo are interpreting our DNS records in a way that I was not expecting.

I have adjusted our DNS records and will see what happens next. It will probably take a few hours from now for the cached records to be propagated everywhere.

Congratulations Mike. I've just received two FCF notifications into my Inbox box. Well done.

I had this problem after a Windows update, I eventually cured it by putting the website address under accepted mail - but I can't remember where - or much else. :?

I have adjusted some more settings on our server, which may have improved email deliverability, although the cause of the problem is still mysterious.
