Peugeot 306 1994 can't start

Post by mixalis kal »

Hello,
I have a 306 1994 and I stopped for 1-2 minutes. Suddenly the couldn't start. I hear the click click when I turn the key at ignition position, I hear the fuel pump but nothing else... Only the battery light and the clock turn off at ignition position as always but the ignition motor can't move... Also I can't find the relay for starter motor.. Is it at engine bay?? And where is the starting motor at this car?? Near the clutch??
Thanks a lot for your time

I am not very familiar with the TU engine, but the starter will be at the flywheel end of the engine, maybe at the back.

There is probably no starter relay on that car, the solenoid being directly connected to the ignition switch.

Will the car jump-start from a second battery/vehicle?

Check the main battery connectors. Remove them, and clean up the battery posts and connector surface. Replace dry (no vaseline) and try cranking again. If either connector gets warm while trying to crank, they should be replaced. Check also the battery -ve cable where it connects to engine block and body.

Also try running a temporary cable from batt+ to the solenoid connection (NOT the main large battery power cable) on the starter motor. If this allows the starter motor to crank, the fault is with the ignition switch.

The only way to start the car is to push it with second gear... After I will try a friend's battery to make sure but with cables nothing happens... I still hear only the click and the motor can't move.

If you checked it with a power bypass and followed the suggestions then it’s probably the starter motor that needs changing. Post up your VIN if you want a part number.

Give me a second ....

5802 M9 is the part number - there are many brands of suitable Starter motors given that your car is 28 years old.

Available second hand here (I appreciate you are in Greece and that there isn't an eBay in Greece)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-206- ... 2056002214

But search on that part number and you should get plenty of options. I can't see any relay

Thank you very much!!! Sorry but I didn't understand if you can't see relay near the starter motor or generally at starters motor electrical circuit?? That means that the click I hear comes from the ignition switch and not from a relay??

The click may be coming from the starter solenoid (number 1 in the right hand diagram above). If so, it is a good indication that the starter motor is faulty. Maybe the brushes are worn out, but these days most people replace the whole unit.

I have never seen a PSA vehicle with manual transmission have a starter relay.

I understood... The click comes from the fuse box under the steering wheel... That's why I believed that there is a relay... Do you believe it's working to try a friend's battery??

It is more likely that the relay you hear is disconnecting the items (e.g. radio) that are switched off when the starter is operated.

Thank you very much!!! it seems a little strange to be starters motor fault because the car has only 90,000km... Isn't it strange??

I have a question.... Is it possible to start an engine pushing it with gear if the starter motor is not working???

Yes, provided you are careful, have enough people to push, and it has a manual gearbox. This assumes that only the starter motor is at fault. Anything else (such as no fuel being supplied) and the car will not start.

Put the car into first gear (on some cars second gear is better), depress the clutch, turn the key to the normal position, and get pushing. Once the car is moving quickly release the clutch (but be ready to press it down again). All being well the speed and weight of the car will get the engine started.

Yes, all that is necessary on a manual 'box petrol engine is to turn the engine over (by tow/pushing it), with the IGN on.

As Marc says, item #1 is the starter motor solenoid, which is a type of heavy-duty relay. The starter motor itself will pull a huge current from the battery (200-300amps) and the IGN switch contacts and wiring cannot cope with this. So the IGN switch activates the starter solenoid, which in turn activates the starter motor.

As said, if faulty, usual procedure is to replace the starter motor and its solenoid as one complete unit.
