I think you're right Chris, this forum does have the feeling of an old, long established pub full of talkative and interesting, characterful locals

I've never been a pubby sort Gibbo. I could never stand that awful smell of stale beer and fags that all pubs seemed to reek of but nowadays although I still find the smell of beer completely revolting I'm very happy to set foot in a really good gastro-pub and enjoy a really good meal with a group of friends and/or family.

Generally the gorgeous aromas of food drown out the beer smells and thank goodness smoking has been banned in all public places now...

And I speak as an ex-smoker!

A good few years ago I was lucky enough to get in on an open day at B&W in Worthing as a mate worked there. They had a demo room set up with their Nautilus speakers in them. It was then that I realised what it was all about - you weren't listening to music, you were in music.
He also got me a pair of 'shop soiled' P6 speakers in the works' sealed bid auction-cum-raffle. I think they cost me about £40, still doing marvellous service to this day Their damage ??? A small mark on the rosewood cabinet

Lucky you, have never been able to hear them. Worth a Google Images search just to get a gander at the Nautilus speakers!
And just doen the road from where I lived and worked for 14 years - Billingshurst.

Ah the bygone days of watching the proms on telly with the sound off and R3 on a HF system! A completely new dimension. (You can try Google translate, but I doubt much of interest will be forthcoming)

DId that too, for a several years. The Beeb carried out (and still do) a good few experiments with both sound and vision during the Proms. Remember "binaural stereo" (a pair of mics either side of a wooden disc, mimicking human ears with head in between)? And the dozens of little HD "ball" cameras, dotted around amongst the orchestra?

Well, I am playing with VR (well, playing a game in VR, to be accurate), and it is definitely a game changer. While the resolution is not that of a top notch monitor, the immersion factor is huge. For example, I am Playing Elite: Dangerous in VR, and I KNOW the bridge of my Anaconda class star-ship is larger than my bedroom (about twice as wide and three times as long). OK, you need a powerful PC with very good graphics cards for it to work, but WOW!

Lovely stuff... Shame it's Japanese and not a product of BREL as perhaps the most successful train-set ever was - the HST... Getting on 45 years in service, still going strong and I believe, still holds the diesel speed record...

The other great success that got away was the APT... It was too good. It did evolve into the Pendolino eventually though...

That new one has a bit to go to beat that

But at least it's being built in the UK and no doubt has lots of UK-sourced parts in it...

And the reason for the picture today....snippet from "Wake up to money" on 5-live mentioning the world oil production figures per day in barrels (42 US Gallons, 35 UK Gallons). Can't remember the exact figure but it was staggering. Put it this way there would be no oak-trees left on planet earth if they still literally packaged it in barrels!

Looked it up and the IEA Market Report as one source reports it as being 96 million barrels per day.

I think that since those images from Pennsylvania in the 1800's, and a miniscule time period for the earth, the current generation, and those before us have indulged in a bit of an energy feeding frenzy.

Think you're right, Neil. One day, this vast and poisonous use of oil as fuel will be looked at in the same way we now regard burning coal. Both of these substances are rich source materials for the chemical industry, and a bit too good to send up in smoke! Roll on fusion, and intelligent renewables.

I agree but whilst may countries continue to make obscene amounts of money from oil and governments see it as a cash-cow via outrageous taxation then nothing is likely to change any time yet sadly...

Money talks too loudly and drowns out all other concerns...
