Re: Picture(s) of the day....
That was my first thought Steve but I don't know enough about them to know if it would be delicious or poisonous!! I do know I've never seen such a big bulky one in a shop or restaurant!!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

I picked several shopping bags full from a field near our house then never dared cook them.

The birds have been pecking the dome and appear to be alright, I'll get a mirror under it tomorrow and check the colour of the gills and go from there!

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
There is zero chance of me eating it but I'd still like to know if it could be edible. So if it passes my preliminary checks I may pick it and take it to a mycologist for a professional identification!! We also have some different beauties in the front garden I'm told, I'll get a picture of those tomorrow!!

Generally speaking, you need to pick wild edible mushrooms as early in the day as possible to beat the little fungus flies to the crop. It's rather off-putting to find wiggly things in your mushrooms

That's a superb crop you have there Mick
Didn't see any today, either in Linford Wood or Salcey Forest...
I just saw this gorgeous early morning autumnal scene in Linford Wood whilst running the parkrun course check

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
When I ran the grocery shop a local brought a punnet of freshly picked mushrooms for us to sell, the lady who owned the local castle helped herself to one and ate it raw. Shortly after I could see the punnet moving on the counter as the bugs came to life in the warm.bobins wrote: 07 Nov 2024, 18:02 Generally speaking, you need to pick wild edible mushrooms as early in the day as possible to beat the little fungus flies to the crop.
