RM has to be one of the vehicles I'm most glad to have had a shot of. Gorgeous thing to drive - especially for the time! Surprised the owner by immediately being able to change gear perfectly smoothly though. Ride is smoother than most modern coaches too.

Some of the repowered ones running round are pretty dire, but an RM with the correct power unit, gearbox and all in top condition is a mighty fine beastie.

Have driven quite a few buses from 30 years later which left me feeling like I'd been run over by the thing rather than driving it after a couple of hours!

Still have a soft spot for the Daimler CVG6 though mind you (first heritage vehicle I ever drove - I have a photo that the trainer snapped as I was parking somewhere for proof of needed!), and Leyland Atlantean (first one I drove actually on the road) too... Won't say no to a late 80s Olympian either...Though only if it's got the Cummins L10 engine and the correct exhaust to make sure you can feel the thing thundering towards you from half a mile off. If I can't drive it, offside rear seat please...

...We won't mention what speed that one would do flat out when we realised the limiter was busted...Wasn't half running cleaner when we got back though!

So what do you do with that particular location....

Easy. You park the Car by Embleton Golf Club (edit..well Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club to be totally accurate) you walk throught the dunes and along the beach for a mile and a half, you go into the Ship Inn for hot chocolate/skinny latte/beer from their own microbrewery, then you walk back with views of Dunstanburgh Castle and return to the car. Done it dozens of times.

Not so long ago those dressed in the same livery ran along the Bletchley - Bedford Line until withdrawal and replacement by something rather more modern and rather less characterful...

The only train I've ever ridden that you could both hear and feel it changing gear! It used, I believe, a 3-speed automatic transmission...

Harry, that was back on page 64..but nice to know the thread gets a bit of reflective perusal, as well as the instant gratification which is its trademark! Fast forward just a touch and we've had the legendary "Military Toilets Day" since then if you missed that particular treat!:-D

Didn't realise it at the time but we saw one of these Garratt type locomotives in action last year at Beddgelert on our little North Wales Holiday last May.

A Garratt is a type of steam locomotive that is articulated into three parts. Its boiler is mounted on the centre frame, and two steam engines are mounted on separate frames, one on each end of the boiler. Articulation permits larger locomotives to negotiate curves and lighter rails that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives. Many Garratt designs aimed to double the power of the largest conventional locomotives operating on their railways, thus reducing the need for multiple locomotives and crews.
