Xantia rust above wheel arch

Unread post by Dommo »

Hi all

I'm sure I've seen a thread regarding this in the past but I can't find it now I'm looking for it. My Xantia has started to bubble rust through a few inches up from the wheel arch, as seen in the pictures below. Where is the rust coming from, the top of the arch? Anything that can be done to cure/help it?

Thanks

The rust isn't the stuff right by the arch, it's a few inches above and behind.

This thread may help a bit Dom..

Check too the sill bung is good and in place in the rear wheelarch and if it has a sunroof that the rear drain pipe is correctly draining out of the top of the inner wheelarch and has not blocked or slipped within...

The area is hard to get to but if you remove the boot carpet and expose the side air vents and remove them that should give you some access to the rear of the area that's damaged...

Thanks Jim I'll take a look either later on today or tomorrow. I think behind the boot carpet is the only area of carpet I haven't yet explored on a xantia!

I've replaced the sill bung previously and sealed it in, so I know that area should be good.

Sometimes the seal between the outer part of the arch and the inner part is defective and water gets in that way.

Check the inside of the wheel arch from the boot... On mine it was bad. Pretty much all material corroded...

It is Jim, really good work......I used it when I was looking for my car, one of the things I "inspected for" when viewing it.

I sealed the "hole" in the arch with a pad made from butyl rubber pond liner stuck on with black 3m panel adhesive.
The problem is the hole allows lots of water in there along with all the airborne road crap :)

Thanks for the tips chaps, indeed it was rusty as hell in that area due to the hole in the wheel arch. I haven't made anything to plug the hole yet but I have bashed out all the loose flaky metal and have blasted it with oil in there to stop it from getting any worse. Not ideal I realise but the best I can do in the circumstances.

I've used some halfords appliance white spray paint we had in the garage, it's gone on a bit thicker than we thought.. But it's white at least (a totally different shade of white of course).

Thanks again :D
