Wainy's Citroen Fleet

Unread post by wainy »

Hi,

This is something I've been promising myself I'd do for ages. I've finally got round to sorting out a photobucket account so I can post some pics of my fleet!

The first pics are of my current daily car, a '98 Xantia SX TD Estate. Nice car, bought from Lexi and seemingly indestructible! It's wearing Activa alloys at the moment purely because the tyres are better...... it does usually wear VSX alloys (standard fit on this Desire spec).

This is my Activa S1, bought for £150 on ebay 18 months ago. I've since added the leather interior. This is off the road at the moment, not cos it's broken, just cos I can't afford to run two cars right now!

Finally, here's a few pics of my GSA X1. This has been mine since 1991 and was my Dad's before that. This is being restored but it gets more complex the further I dig, hence the GSA Special becoming a donor. Between the two cars I've got one decent one I think. The Special is in bits in the garage!

This says 173k........... a good innings!

This is an example of the rot that's set in..........

Citroens are absolutely in my blood, from my Dad's first Citroen, a Dyane 4 in 1973 through to a C4 HDI VTR+ Coupe I had from new for 2 years. I've had mainly GSA's and one GS, a 1972 1,015cc..... WDL 153K where are you?

Excellent mate! GSA is an interesting project ............I love them though aint been around one in an oily fashion. Activa is very nice. Once Jim gets a new Ram recon system up and running I would like to have a go with one.

The Xantia estate is looking good . Great to see you getting mileage out of it as they are such a usefull all round car.. I will miss it now that my fishing season has started

Hey Andy .........I see you still got the towball fitting on the front of car. I bet you've had a few strange questions from peeps asking WTF is that thing on there? :conf:

Lovely Activa Wainy :D And it has the badge... Nearly a twin of my red one...

Didn't realise you were restoring a GSA. Excellent! Still one of my favorite past Citroens. I wanted one when I stated driving but my father dismissed them as too complex and unreliable. After all, they had that funny suspension on them

The GSA progress I'll be following with great interest. Great blog material.

WDL 153K? We had an Ami 8 that was WDL 7xxK (might have been 734 can't remember). Bought cheap in about 1981 / 2, cos it was a bit rough, and really needed new barrells and pistons (it had a bit of an oil thirst!), but it ran for about 3 years without the work being done. Eventually the tin worm got it (and the fact that the mushrooms growing in the passenger foot well got too big and threatening!).

We'd have had GS's on the fleet at the same time. Happy days!

EDIT: DVLA suggests WDL 153k last taxed in 1996, so probably bean tins by now  WDL 734k comes back as a blue 602cc car, last taxed in 1986, so it likely was that reg.

When I bought WDL 153K, in 1990 I think, there was no rot just a bit of crustiness on the door bottoms and front wings. There was no welding done or needed. I sold it the following year. I'm surprised it was gone by 1996 if that's true :( !

The engines in the very early GSs are very characterful. A pig to start sometimes  and take an age to warm up (inlet manifold hot spot was warmed by oil rather than exhaust as on later GSs and GSAs) but is the only engine I've ever driven behind that is QUIETER at 4000 rpm than at 2000 :D ! Used to smooth out incredibly and was like a rotary engine at high revs. Engine was very over-engineered, with double valve springs for example which probably accounts for this. Allegedly, the engine could rev to 8000 although I never tried this!

This car also had the smoothest ride of any car I've driven.

PS..... for Lexi....... Noone's commented on the tow bar thing on the front. You welded it on VERY solidly!

No holidays in Scotland planned, unless there's another car to collect....... anyone got a C6 for £500 up there?!!!!!!

Hi, not logged on for a couple of days..... very busy!

Lexi: Not really got much planned for the estate now. Have replaced the front seats and its running fine so will just keep it serviced I reckon now. Glad its running OK cos need to devote time to the Activa and GSA!

DaveEire: The Activa was on ebay and just didn't seem to be getting bid on....... £150 was the starting bid and I was the only bidder! Had to travel to St Andrews to pick it up but was SO worth it :D . It even had 6 month's MOT on it! AND in sailed through its next MOT too, no ram leaks etc......
Guess I was just lucky! :bd:

XantiaDaveEire - you've just got to keep your radar turned up to the max
- I've followed up an ad for an Activa that was Free to a good home which
I'm totally besotted with, another for £50 off this forum and a pal of mine
who likes Citrons too gave me his Activa (he knew I lusted after) in payment
for Graphic Design work I'd done for his business!

Here's an update to my fleet. The Xantia TD Estate has gone to be replaced by...........

Image

A 1997 XM 2.0 16V SX (Auto) :D . Ace car and the first car I've had since the GSA X1 where someone has stopped me to ask questions about it... this happened today. It's in pretty stunning condition, even the flap for the keypad is still attached!

Some of you may recognise it as one that was for sale at a garage in Rotherham for a while, festooned with additional 16V and XM badges as well as a double chevron on the hatch. I've kept the latter for two reasons.... 1) It doesn't want to come off and 2) I actually quite like it!

Here's some more pics:

The only real problem with the car is that the plate tells everyone I'm a Welsh Man Utd supporter, when actually I am an Everton fan from Birkenhead living in West Yorkshire!

Can't have everything, hey?
