Red Temp and Stop light Help

Post by howiedean »

Hi,
My fathers Xantia HDI has started to display the red stop light and temp light when the interia fan is switched on. Looking at previous messages it sounds like it could the the Bitron unit, has anyone here experianced the same symptoms and can anyone explain how the system works?

Thank you

Howie....

The ' stop ' Lamp on my XM comes on periodically, with the display 'slow down excessive water temperature' when I am doing about 30 mph! A glance at the temperature gauge indicates that the water is actually below normal! The problem is in the radiator fan control system which includes the 'bitron' unit and temperature sensor. The most likely problem is bad connections but I have not been able to find it on mine because the fault will not stay there long enough.

id say it is more likely to be a siezed or faulty cooling fan motor or one of the fans or relays is missing a feed than the bitron unit beeing faulty. check the three relays & the wires ging to them in between the two cooling fans for corrosion.they are located under a black cover.

My Xantia does that sort of thing at times (or at least it has done in the past) but its a 1.9 TD not an HDI.

The problem is that the connector on the temperature sensor that controls the fans tends to get corroded, on the TD its the brown plug on the front of the base of the fuel filter / thermostat housing. The quick fix solution was to either jiggle the plug about a bit or to unplug and plug it back in a couple of times to take off the surface corrosion. Last time it did this I cleaned it properly and put a little silicone grease on it (Dow Corning Electrical Compound) and it hasn't played up since.

The HDI is a bit different to the XUD so I'm not sure whether it will have the brown plug or whether its in the same place if it does have one, have a look and post on here what you find out!

Just to clarify the symptoms:

Red light comes on when the interia fan is on and control is to demist,
if control is on anything other than demist you can have fan on full and no
red light

Did you check these things ?
the A/C comes on when you set the fans to demist, when the A/C comes on the cooling fans (are supposed to) come on,if the cooloing fans dont work it flashes the temp/stop light as a warning.

***THE FANS ARE WORKING OK*****. I've not had a look at the relays yet as I'm 140 miles away from the car.
What I was trying to find out is what effect switching to demist has on the system.

Cheers
Howie
