flat performance xm

Unread post by chopper666 »

my 1992 xm 2ltr i, 107 k miles, seems very flat and sluggish when pulling away, particularly in second. Its not a major problem, just doesnt pick up quite as well as previously. Once up and rolling there is no noticable change in performance and quiet as usual. However this only started yesterday.
The only things out of ordinary i did yesterday on my 16 mile round trip to work were.
1- give it a bit of stick in second, the into third to get past a bus, that was three miles into outward journey. (I'm normally a quite sedate driver but was running late that day)
2- put £30 worth of shell optimax in, rather than normal standard unleaded.
I recall reading some where, that some cars do not run too well on optimax , could this be the case here? Any suggestions?
(Car had full service less than one month ago and has 11 months left on MOT)[8][?]

AHH!. My wife suggested to me that after I put only £5 worth of that shell OPTI max, my new to me Xsara VTR started to play up. Over reving, sluggish between the gears, cold start not turning off untill the engine was up to temp etc. I found that after some new plugs, (bosch super 4), STP injector cleaner, new idel speed valve (as the old one was full off oil and soot) and a new engine temp sensor for the ECU all is running well. Looking back I can say that on the 2 occassions I've used the shell stuff I've had problems running. It may just have speeded things up alittle on some of the engine components but I'm sure it had some thing to do with it. Stick a bottle of the STP fuel injector aditive in your tank and see how you get on.
