Xsara 1.8sx cutting out

Unread post by Peter Apperley »

My Xsara has a habit of cutting out suddenly when I am driving along normally. It is as if I have lifted my foot of the accelerator and no amount of pumping has any effect, then after a few seconds it comes back with a jerk. It only happens once on my way to work and once on my way home( ten miles each way). At the end of the journey the tickover is very lumpy.Has anyone any ideas. I thought it may be deisel in the petrol, but this has been happening since I bought the car, about a year now. Could it be the fuel filter or is it more likely to be a sensor somewhere.

Right...
Try searching this site for "MAP sensor". It sounds like the good old MAP sensor is full of oil vapour.

Thanks for the tip. I removed the MAP sensor cleaned it with solvent and put it in the oven to dry it out and the car is now running fine.
It is quite a struggle to remove and even more difficult to replace but I managed it with only a few cuts and bruises.
Am I likely to see the problem reoccur and how long will the fix last?
Thanks again, this web site is very useful and entertaining.[:)]
