Looks like the tank on my XM (96 S2 2.1 TD)is leaking, local breaker is quoting me Au $450 for S/H one. Or Au $350 for one from a S1.
Does anyone know if the S1 and S2 tanks are interchanagable ? Failing that is it possible to repair these tanks ? There is no obvious damage but the car leaves Diesel after standing for a bit.
Anyone know of a spare tank they could send to Australia ?[:D]

Have you checked all the breater and other pipes and fittings very carefully?
Most Citroen tanks are plastic and therefore immune from corrosion. A year ago we bought a ZX diesel and immediately noticed that it used an enormous amount of fuel. As I also have a BX TD this seemed excessive and on getting underneath I could see that the tank was wet. I duly removed the back seat and the covers over the inlet/return pipes and the gauge unit and the wells around both were full of fuel. The leakage seemed to be higher up and I removed a largish diameter breather pipe that didn't seem very tight. I put a new clip on it and replaced it but the problem was still there and as I could see no otherexplanation I got a couple of new sealing rings for the gauge unit and pipes. I duly took out the gauge unit and replaced its ring but wasn't convinced there was anything wrong and this proved the case when I filled up.
The leakage seemed to be coming from very high up on the tank and eventually after loads of sqinting and looking with a torch and a miror I found another breather pipe just out of reach and more or less out of sight. I didn't feel like dropping the tank as it was 3/4 full of fuel and so I cut a hole in the seat box to get better access, took off the pipe and found a split about 1 inch long on the hidden side. I then enlarged the hole for better access and replaced the pipe and riveted a plate over the hole.
Problem solved! Are you sure you've found all the breather pipes? This one in fact connected into the filler neck and is presumably to relieve an air lock and enable the tank to be fully filled.
A word of caution - if you are going to use a drill be very careful not to damage the tank as on the ZX it is very close to the floor indeed.

Somewhere along the way, Citroën seems to have changed the volume of the XM fuel tank. The reason I say this is that my old '93 TD12 could easily take at least 90 litres of diesel, if filled carefully. However the new car from '95 (also a TD12) will take a maximum of 82 litres. Wheather the change was made between series 1 and 2 is unknown to me, but somewhere they lost about 8-10 litres!
