No Canaries on the Canary Islands.
Same with the Virgin Islands, no canaries there either.

It is well done Mick, meanwhile over at Chez Falcon, first place for me this time. Quite tricky.

Re: "Word/Phrase of the Day"
A nice one from Neil in the Bargain Basement thread: "paucity" I had to look that one up!! It is a synonym of "scarcity" !!

That was a nice reward for me, thanks Mick.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑18 Feb 2024, 09:29 A nice one from Neil in the Bargain Basement thread: "pau city" I had to look that one up!! It is a synonym of "scarcity" !!
Of the 8 mentions ever since the beginning of time on the FCF, I have been responsible for 4, there is your elevation of it to today's word of the day, and the other 3 noteworthy contributions.
So as not to quote it again to preserve the integrity of this query here are the magnificent 8 uses of "pau city" on the FCF

Re: "Word/Phrase of the Day"
To accompany the word a small bit of prose putting it in context. This was the first of the 8 uses of the word, from the very early days of the forum in 2003.
A nice pithy post in a nicely titled thread "Makes you wonder why we bother" from Tom Sheppard

Thanks Tom from the 2024 class of "Tolerant Anoraks", you have a nice way of putting it!tomsheppard wrote: ↑07 Jan 2003, 18:28 At the time of writing, there are 320 postings for peugeot cars with a 3 to 1 advice ratio, and 1420 for Citroens with a 4.5 to 1 advice ratio. This demonstrates two things: Citroen owners seem to be more helpful than Peugeot owners (Probably due to time on their hands because they cannot use their cars!) and Citroens have four times as many problems. So the received wisdom is true: Citroens are, alas, unreliable. I very much admire the ingeniuity of their design but the actual engineering is poor and they are damned difficult to work on. The various forums have not a single good word to say for the dealer network which may be another reason for the popularity of this informed and helpful site. The sort of faults that occur are not to be tolerated in today's cars. Regular water leaks, cooling system problems and a suspension system that still baffles many and fails to work properly even after nigh on half a century's volume production speaks volumes for the pau city of Quality control.(well done Tom first mention ever of pau city on the FCF ) Sophistication is ok, so long as the dratted thing works. If not it is just too clever for its own good. Once my Citroen is fixed, I think I'll be looking for a Peugeot estate to replace it with; it isn't that it is a bad car, just not "special" enough to be worth the aggravation. Add to that a company that just doesn't seem to care about its reputation and the poor old Cit has little chance except as the plaything of tolerant anoraks such as ourselves.

Re: "Word/Phrase of the Day"
This post elsewhere on the Trivia Investigation Thread's "Swan" day should be fertile ground for similar offerings.
Magnet a young swan
Let it seep into your subconscious, and use it next time you see young swans, all the better for vocalisation in phrases to confuse your nearest and dearest like "look at those lovely Swans with their magnets"
Here's another example from the Falcon store of such things creatively used by the young and innocent, again ornithologically related.
"The Pheasant" the pavement

Today's word of the Day is thereforePeter.N. wrote: ↑27 Feb 2024, 23:37 If I can go back to the swans for a minute, when we first moved down here in 1970 we used to have the occasional day out around Slapton Sands which many of you will know has a freshwater lake running parallel with the sea. We stopped to feed the birds one day and a youngster crept up on our lad who was probably about 4 or 5 and took half a slice of bread out of his hand which startled him a bit. He was telling everyone for the next few days he had been bitten by a magnet.
