The rivet is often overlooked and underestimated

The bridge over the River Dee at Bangor-ys-y-Coed (Bangor on Dee) taken on 24th November 2012. It had been raining recently and so the river was quite full!

Not a railway in sight I'm afraid!

Just for its artistic effect I took some photos on tour this week of the iron bridge over the Tweed at Innerleithen.
liked the pattern/shape of the rivets and gave them a little feature on this thread.

Back at the hotel stumbled across Britains' greatest Bridges on Channel 5 and watched the episode on Robert Stephenson's Britannia Bridge. Of course I have followed that today with the episode on the Tyne Bridge.

..and yes a whole section of the programme about...Rivets. These days a decent amount of tech is applied to raising the temp as required to get the rivet white hot, in the days of building the bridge not so, a brazier where a worker heated up the rivets, then threw the white hot rivet up to the chaps who were doing the rivetting, and one of them would be the catcher of the white hot rivet.

Hence the beer known as rivet catcher gets its name...

Excellent programme on Channel 5 on the Britannia Bridge broadcast again last night,

I have now watched a few of these. All excellent and informative, with lots of things you didn't know, and gems you wouldn't notice on a casual visit. Take Ironbridge... dovetail and mortice and tenon joints used to join the ironwork together, because those were the familiar carpentry methods of the time.

and further afield in the World's Greatest Bridges complementary series, watched a couple on the Golden Gate and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Each a sea of rivets! and at the Golden Gate the rivets being replaced one by one with nuts and bolts.

What is it, & why is it there?

Its a former Railway Bridge crossing the River Browney (tributary of the Wear) at Malton on the former Consett to Durham Railway in County Durham. The line closed in 1966, and the track was lifted in 1967. Now a cycleway and railway path from Consett (where it joins with the Coast to Coast cycleway) to Durham, and used more now than it ever was as a passenger carrying line. The white porcelain insulators on the telegraph poles along the line after it was closed, provided a bit of target practice for the young Falcon's stone throwing skills

Well it's still confusing - the cleverly selected perspective of your photos appears to show a random metal object thrusting up out of the turf - the first photo even shows greenery both sides of said metallic growth! Still having trouble imagining where the river fits in...
