Hi, I'd need some help please to identify correctly the compressor for the A/C of my Peugeot 406 2.1TD Break from 11/1997, as it is leaking and because of the impossible quote the specialized garage made, I'm going to order myself a new compatible compressor and my mechanic who I usually go to will install it, and only then I will go to the A/C specialist to have it vacuumed and charged with gas. Only problem seems to be to identify correctly, while searching on the net I found two different types, not sure if that's correct. But then these seem to be suitable for quite a lot of cars of the PSA group, not only the Peugeot 406, so maybe it won't be that tough. Today I managed to shoot some photos of the installed compressor (as the system shortly works fine after charging and before the gas escapes reaching low point, I assume it's the correct model). Here they go. I was able to identify a part number (6560502). Googling it up looks like it's a Delphi. Can someone confirm this? Also, what would be the easiest way to obtain the correct OEM number from here? Or can I try to search for equivalents for this number from Delphi? As I'm not sure if I can trust the "vehicle compatibility" tools from part sellers... often they are not very precise... Thanks for any hints on this.

After a second good luck, it seems this number 6560502 is already the OEM number??? Now I'm confused.

That's not an OEM number, but for official parts info, we do ask members for a £10 Forum donation - as we are charged for this info. But it will entitle you to ask for live part numbers and parts diagrams for up to 2 years. Details below: If you want to go ahead and upgrade your membership links are below, then just pop your VIN up here.
A response to your question by a Forum Admin will require detailed vehicle information that requires you to have made a current contribution to the Forum. |

Agree with Marc on the above as it will help identify the correct part but are you sure it is the compressor that is at fault, i notice you say it works fine on a regas until the gas escapes to a level where the compressor/system will not run.
Have you tried a pressure test with/without dye to show where it is leaking from.
Just asking that is all as the leak could be from anywhere within the system

Agree with that. Do check out out the correct part number for the compressor (which will allow you to choose a direct replacement), but before replacing it, have the gas leak properly diagnosed, as it may be from elsewhere on the system. This is done either with chemical 'sniffer', or by having the system refilled with a UV tracer dye, where leaks show up under UV light. This needs to be done by a workshop experienced with AC systems.

Re: Peugeot 406 - Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
Thanks. I'm going to think about this possibility of getting official OEM numbers from here by donating.
Regarding the problem, this is exactly what I did, I went back to that garage (who specialize on A/C repair) and they did have a check of the underside where the oil drops are and also close to the pulley of the compressor, noting the oil but also using a UV light and confirming that it's the compressor that's leaking. I'm aware that the system can very well have an additional leak, but first things first - if the compressor is leaking, I know that it can be repaired, but honestly, I can't find anyone willing to do that, at least not here. And I'm in no position to do this myself, for what I could find out on the internet, even a simple repair like the shaft seal implies normally the use of special tools and it may be difficult to get the correct seals. Also, the compressor might very well have further seals damaged or other problems, so it's going to substituted. Then system will be flushed and properly filled with gas and oil by that garage, then hopefully it will work fine and hold the gas. If it then still loses the gas, then there's another leak and that can be sorted, too. Would be real bad luck if it had a second leak in some other component that's difficult to access or expensive, so for now I'm simply focussing on what's pretty obvious - the compressor is leaking, so my best option here and right now, is to substitute it.

If you look on Mister Auto (for example) there is a choice of makes of compressor.
An original part number needed to get the right one.
Have just replaced one here on a BX, which cost around €280.
At that sort of price, probably not worth the inconvenience and expense of repairing an old one.

Re: Peugeot 406 - Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
So, I found all the alternative makes/models. I can post the list here (can't assure that all of them are correct), if that doesn't go against any rules of the forum. It's actually easy once you identify the correct type. Here, it's a Harrison/GM V5. Alternatively, a Sanden type (I thin SD7V16, might have that number wrong though) can be used but it's more expensive and I think requires a slightly different belt. Right now I'm looking for the best deals for a V5 type, which for now seems to be the Nissens 89060. It has good reviews on the net and a good price, and is readily available from different places. Thanks for all the support.

Re: Peugeot 406 - Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
You must go with the original PSA part number when looking for a compatible/equivalent aftermarket replacements.
A mistake in ordering (and needing to return and re-order) will have you kicking yourself for not signing up for proper parts infomation. You'll likely need other parts too, and the small forum donation will allow us to search for info for you for all of this year and next.
Make/model/year info is not always the whole story, as parts spec can change by production day, which using your vehicle's VIN number always takes into account. VIN checks are how we search both replacement parts and many repair procedures.

Re: Peugeot 406 - Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
Alright, you convinced me, although I'm pretty sure I got the original number correct (6453AQ), it won't hurt to have the confirmation from here, and yes, if this allows for looking up OEM numbers for one year or more, than it's definitely worth it. I'm going to donate the value right now.

Done. So now I have to post here the VIN? Or do I send it in private message to someone from the forum? How does it work?

You need to post the VIN here. It will automatically be obscured so only Forum staff can read is (like this, for example; VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] ). Then the Forum staff can use it to look up exactly what YOUR vehicle had fitted when she rolled out of the factory.

Re: Peugeot 406 - Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
I donated and posted the VIN above. Could someone from staff please have a look and give me the part number? As I really need to order this, the weather is freakin warm over here ... thank you very much in advance.

Re: Peugeot 406 - Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
You have to bear in mind we all have lives too. To be fair you decided not to upgrade at the time, so the staff have moved on to deal with other posts. With hundreds of post a day we deal with, it may take a while to get back to your particular post.
Now back to the issue:
The official part number for a new compressor is: 6453 TJ. Costs new from Peugeot £964.46.
This part number could have several compressors under this part number:
SANDEN INT- - SD7V16 1106
SANDEN INT- - SD7V16 1227
SANDEN INT- - SD7V16 B068
SANDEN INT- - SD7V16 1218
The exchange part number is: 6453 TK and this was for a
SD7V16 QA1106 AND QA1227 and costs £512.30 from Peugeot.
Both the above are obviously UK sterling prices with 20% UK VAT included, so will be the equivalent in your local currency, but exclude a refundable deposit on return of your old compressor if going via the dealer. But at least you have the compatible parts id sourcing elsewhere.
So if you want an exact match try and match up the numbers on your old unit - however, if you had a Delphi branded original compressor, they are no longer available, so use one of the Sandens above.
