Danish lad I worked with bought one of those. The Swedish besiktningen (MOT) made him take the steering wheel out and replace with a metal & plastic one, the wooden one deemed dangerous in a collision as splinters could cause serious damage.

A trifle harsh I'd say!! The same argument could be applied to wood dash and door trims, not to mention Morgan chassis!! A little OTT for me

Probably as in a head on the steering wheel is first contact. No airbags in his.
He dumped it and bought one of the first SAAB Turbos. When they went to Copenhagen it attracted far more interest than the boss' Bentley.

Talking of the dangers of wood, one of my young customers crashed his MGB through a wooden rail fence, he couldn't get out until the cops and fire brigade arrived, wedged in place and against the steering wheel by a fence rail that had pierced through the car and between his back and the seat and out the other side, it hadn't touched him because he was thrown forward by the impact.

The forum outage from Saturday extinguished a few posts about this Spitfire. At the Auction the hammer came down at £3,950, a grand and a bit under the lower estimate. Looks like there has been a bit of negotiation and its recorded as sold now with a £5,500 price tag.

The chopper is a mere amuse-bouche, seemed a shame to cut it off the screen shot!

I borrowed one of these from the dealer when I was in the trade and took it touring to Scotland for a week. Sadly I have to say that while it was a great car when just driving around day to day from our rented holiday home, it was not good at all for the return journeys. The hood, when down, takes up most of the boot space meaning you cannot travel with two suitcases and the top down unless you want to risk them on the back seat. Not ideal!! A lovely car to drive though I do have to say.
