An interesting enough little nostalgia quiz of 10 questions....10/10 for me but nice little explanations and links with your answers. Liked the Torch!

I am in mourning for my own memory this morning. On Tuesday I was exceedingly busy, had a very late night and consequently slept like a log not waking naturally as normal. SWMBO had to wake me yesterday morning with the news that the grandchildren would be with us in 10 minutes for their holiday games morning!! I had to jump out of bed, wash and dress and got downstairs with 2 minutes to feed the birds for her before they arrived! I just made it and then became engrossed in the games and the rest of yesterday's activities culminating in Manchester City's great game against Bayern Munich. After that I went to bed exhausted amd woke this morning to discover the fallacy in my brain:

A middling score from the Falcon 6/10, quite beatable I would say, but have you seen the questions :?: I don't think I ever knew some of this stuff. English is a wonderful language but...its rules and grammar, odd spellings and pronunciation can make it tricky at times...
English Grammar 10 questions here (useless website presentation as ever scroll down to start the quiz!)
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articl ... r-children
and on to
Apostrophes 7/10 for the Falcon! On some things I've not been doing it right.

6/10 on the grammar, the same as Neil, but I am a very fussy punctuator and scored a full house 10/10!!! :-D

Dismal result.
I admit knowing nothing about grammar, usually better with apostrophes.
I generally go by what sounds right, rather than an academic approach.

This may prove a bit too difficult, I had never heard of it before, but it came up in a Quordle weekly challenge as one of the four 5-letter words required to be found.

So what is the 5-letter word. :?: I looked it up and would you believe it there is a video explaining what it is.

There are apparently 44 or 45 of these in spoken English language of which the commonest is known as....

S??WA

There is this rather nice presentation of what it is

Enough spoonfeeding, what's the word :?:

Very good Steve. Great if you knew already but even better if it spurred a little bit of investigation :-D

Emma, don't know her second name, specialises in spoken english education, and her youtube channel has amassed 5.5 million subscribers. Without even touching local accents with their different pronunciation, and vocabulary, what you might call "normal" spoken english when its pointed out to you has its own set of unwritten rules which we just pick up without realising it.

The "uh" sound, subject of the quiz word, being the most prevalent of the 44/45 ish sounds of the spoken English language and as illustrated by the words in the screenshot can replace all of the written vowels when spoken. You may think that you say umbrella all the time but in reality you are more likely to say umbrell-uh.
Ditto with the other words on the list....celebrate, circus, carrot and principal, typically in spoken English will incude the "uh" sound.

Her you tube channel is here https://www.youtube.com/c/mmmEnglish_Emma/videos
