Re: squealing brakes
Thanks everyone - a question. The anti-squeal shim, it's asymmetric in shape, which way is which?

Re: squealing brakes
Never seen one. Only the wire clip that hooks over the caliper body and under the pad retaining pin. No asymmetric shim shown in any of my books.

Re: squealing brakes
Rear - Item 10 (or 9 for older model)
Front - None(?)
Not sure which side brake they are showing. (I haven't looked at the front ones yet)
And with the spring clip which goes over the calipers (Item 11 for rear & 9 for front), does the pad bolt (Item 16 & 15) go on top or below the middle part where there is a bit of a dip?

Re: squealing brakes
It has been a long time but that all looks rather familiar.
The padbolt spring dip goes under the bolt.

Re: squealing brakes
The location of the bleed nipple may help orientate the image for placement of the plate 10. Never had to dismantle my rears, though pad material has been checked without removal. My service sheets are missing 4-451-20 May have to look out for that one day.

Re: squealing brakes
On other cars of the vintage, the beefier part of the shim would generally go behind the trailing edge of the pad.

Re: squealing brakes
It was a right shambles to begin with.
LH rear had one of the shims had the cutout towards rear, pad retaining spring just sitting on top of the through bolt.
RH side was no better - the shims were right way around but spring had open end facing forward, which jammed the brake pads against the through bolt.
I haven't taken it for a test drive as it went dark so I will have to see if it made any difference tomorrow.
Also, I chamfered the pads edges so that's got to help.
The parts list figure really needs orientation annotation on it. As for the bleed screw, it wasn't on the outboard of the brake disc as far as I could tell - didn't check the inboard as the stone shield needed to be removed and I was already running behind schedule.

Re: squealing brakes
Try removing the disc (mark its position, if not checking with a run-out micrometer), and thoroughly cleaning up both faces where it sits against the hub. When really clean and particle-free, coat the joint sparingly and evenly with copper grease. This will ensure that the resonating disc is acoustically coupled to the very heavy hub/stub axle. (A violin string will not 'sing' if kept in contact with a heavy mass.)
If all that fails, you may be looking at renewing pads and discs, in that order. Discs can become prone to resonating (squealing) as they become thinner, and their mass decreases.

Re: squealing brakes
I'd better get a move on with the Nissan in the garage first - at least the noise is now tolerable...
Thanks all!

Re: squealing brakes
Another voice here for a very sparing smear of copper ease. Have never had any issues with it melting and running, even on the day when I wound up pasting a Lada Niva around a track for a couple of hours. I toasted the pads pretty well, but the copper ease was still right where it started.
Really need to do this on the 107 here as its brakes make a right royal din right now. Hadn't driven it in ages so wasn't aware how bad that had become.

I had a 120L for a short time =) And a Fiat 125 (one of my all time favorites), I guess a cousin to a Riva...

Re: squealing brakes
I have to open up front brakes to see if squeal is coming from there as well - do fronts have shims (for GS and GSA, if different)?
I don't think that's the case though as fiddling with rear reduced the volume and the frequency of the squeal but the actual nature of the noise is the same.
I now have the CRC anti-squeal spray - apparently it's the best stuff (and almost 4 time more expensive than the Permatex stuff) so I will try one more time on the rears before moving onto fronts.

Re: squealing brakes
No shims on the front of my GS. Don't recall any on the GSA, though it was a long time ago.
