If you are thinking of taking a holiday on the waterways of Great Britain you almost certainly need to know about locks. There are, basically, three instances of locks; ones that occur only occasionally (where the level of the waterway changes in height gradually), flights (where there are several locks close together, separated by a short stretch of water known as a 'pound') to allow a greater change in height over a short distance, and staircases (two or more locks connected directly to each other), to allow for a large height change in the minimum of space. Grindley Brook has a total of 6 locks, with the top three being a staircase and the bottom three being a flight. There are clear instructions on how to proceed through the staircase, depending on whether you are going up or down them. There is mention of the 'cill' (not a spelling error), which will be clearly shown in the three pictures of lock 2. The cill is, in effect, a step from the level at the higher lock down to the level at the lower lock, and you MUST make certain to keep your boat between the cill markers (one at the upper end, the other at the lower end) so your boat does not get hung up.

All of the photos are my own work (most with my camera, but a couple using my phone, as it was early morning, and the lock in question showed more detail (due to low water levels)).

Heidi (The Narrowboat Pirate) has just updated her YouTube channel with her and two other narrowboats heading down the Grindley Brook locks, so you can see what is involved, if you want;

Already do the National Lottery and Euromillions for 4 weeks in advance.

The last time I saw photos of that JBM was in The Automobile magazine around a decade ago, and she did not look good then. However, her colour was predominantly red with black highlights (mudguards, etc).

There is an error in that she is believed to be the only JBM in existence. Quite some time back a wealthy USA author spent some time in the UK, mainly around East Grinstead, and be bought a JBM, which (I believe) he said was the best car he had ever owned/driven. He had it shipped back to USA, and it is now in his collection. The author was L. Ron Hubbard, so no chance of THAT one coming to the market!

The son of old Mother Hubbard... His cupboards were certainly not bare and I expect his dogs got all the bones they ever desired... The lad did well...

I knew he was the founder of a modern day religious sect but never knew he was an authour and much more besides... Every day's a school day... Thanks James :D

My Mum is Jenny Maxwell, the author (among a lot of other things). Her books are mainly dark and psychological. When I finished reading "The Blacksmith" it took me several hours to get to sleep. It was a disturbing read, but what was more disturbing is I knew the author, and it's me MUM!

Well, the JBM is now part of the Family. My cousin Bob has successfully won the auction, and the grin (on his Instagram page) can be seen from Goodwood to Reading!

Well, my C5 has just passed her MoT test. Three advisories; front tyres are a bit worn, rear tyres are a bit worn, and top brake light not working (which will not be due to blown bulbs, as it is an LED unit).

The tester told me of an anomaly about the last item. If the top brake light is not working it is an advisory. If it is working and showing > 75% lights then it is a pass. If it is working and showing < 75% lights it is a FAIL!!! Bureaucracy at its' finest!

Well done James, despite the apparent bureaucratic lunacy a pass is a pass!! :-D
