It was a pain unwrapping them, they hadn't invented the Stanley knife then.

You surprise me (1) never occurred to me they didn't simply unwrap (bit like removing a bandage) (2) Stanley knives seem to have been around for ever.

Don't remember them in the '50s. You had to unwind the paper in sections, cut a bit off then start again.

I well remember wrapped tyres, especially bike tyres... Both motorbike and proper bike...

Michelins and Dunlops always came wrapped when I first came into the trade (1950) as has already been said they took a fair bit of unwinding.

Stanley knife goes back to 1936, don't know when we started importing them, but by the mid-'50's - surely.

I almost bled to death with a misused Stanley Knife... I accidentally slashed my wrist. I had a bit of trouble convincing the duty medic it was an accident and not deliberate...

I still have the scar even now... All this happened when I was serving a tour of duty in Cyprus in the early 80s... I've always treated knives with the greatest respect since...

One side effect is that I could no longer play golf after the accident and took up racing karts instead...

I had a pal who was a carpet shop owner and carpet fitter, he sliced into his femoral artery trying to cut the edge off a carpet tile. he would have bled to death in minutes if a passer by hadn't picked up a stone and tied it tightly over the wound and whisked him off to hospital.

Remember anti-static strips dangling off the back of cars in the 60's and 70's? I'm sure there was some myth that they helped combat motion sickness.

You can still buy them at Halfords and other places today, although no bogus car sickness benefit is promoted. Wonder if they even prevent you getting an occasional static shock.

So I'll give 100 points today for anyone who actually has a static strip, or who spots one when they are out and about.

There were a lot of static shock complaints probably due more to nylon clothing than anything the car did, a nylon shirt and wool jumper could charge your mobile phone for a month.

I remember when cars had vinyl bench seats you could slide across the seat to get out and receive quite a hefty belt off the door handle and I think that may have been partly responsible for the 'earth straps'. But of course it didn't make any difference because the charge was on you not the car.
