As a teenager on our annual hols in the Austrian Alps, we had a VW camper van in blue and white with one of these monstrositys on the roof - guess who drew the short straw and had to sleep in it!

Bl**dy freezing was not the word, I'd wake up with icicles on some parts and frostbite on other extremities, you get the idea. They didn't have all this Carlos Fandango space age insulation back in those days for quilted sleeping bags!

^ Looks like that on-roof tent idea is still going:

I've seen a few of these before..

And even MINI are getting in on the action:

Hope they're better insulated these days :o

It does rather. It has been over-chromed IMO and looks more like a kids toy.

But those tents look a lot more splenditious than what we had back in the day.

Roof tents are de riguer among overlanders - but if you're going to wild camp where the local wildlife is inquisitive/unpleasant/downright dangerous they must make sense - unlike the latest "Mini".

While idly flicking through Romahomes for sale I found this:-

I think my father had an old Morris minor when I was a wee nipper, and my gran put her foot through the floor of it apparently it was so rusty.

Those Pugs - & Estafettes - are benefitting from absurd prices commanded by H-vans now.

Never understood why so many campers seem to end up with bodykits plastered on the van bit...always looks odd.

I reckon the old cream and maroon (AutoTrail's standard palette in that era, blue over white was a rarer option, with green over white the rarest) looked very dated on vans anything newer than a Bedford CF - the cooler colours suited anything from the late 80s onwards better I think.

Still nice to see them about though. It's funny how you start noticing older campers much more once you have one - and that the drivers do generally wave to you on the road. VW camper drivers seem to be the exception...I get the impression that if it doesn't have a VW badge on they refuse to acknowledge the presence of it on the road.
