If all else fails, try a Bosch diesel service centre (pukka Bosch, not just any-old).

Was a bosch company that replaced the injectors.

Spoke to the chap at the French car garage yesterday, he said the exhaust was quite sooty, and that i it might be a fault with the egr, if not he would need to have the van overnight, to test from cold.. My problem is, I can’t do without it for a good few weeks.

I thought you had already booked it in for an EGR clean a few posts ago - it's the logical thing to do next and can only improve things regardless Rich.

My garage wouldn't do it Marc, he said take it to a diesel specialist, but they are 20 miles away, the firm that did the injectors, although they are bosch specialist. Think I will ask the garage round the corner if they will do it.

Update. Over the last month or so I haven't noticed the diesel smell as much. The white smoke on cold start soon disappears after a maximum 3/4 mile driving. I will still book it in with a local independent French car specialist, and ask them to remove and clean the egr.
