Likewise, welcome, it seems like a nice idea to emigrate to a mountainous region, that being what you're used to. I imagine the Flora & Fauna are totally different tho?

Do you find the Spanish more welcoming than you did the Welsh?

What's the older car marketplace like there? ....and can you suggest any good Spanish Car Sales websites (google translate will take care of language issues). < £1k (Euro) end of the market.

I'd quite like to think that I could rattle on down to Spain, the South of France or similar and find myself another Peugeot 405 Estate when the tin-worm gets the better of my current one, maybe in 2-5 years time.

I suspect I'll not find one in the UK and I have no desire to get something else... so I'm 'making advance enquiries' as opportunities present themselves, for when the time comes.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance. Enjoy both the Forum and your Motoring! :-D

Hi! The Spanish have been very welcoming to us......and they will be to most people. Except if people come in with the wrong attitude obviously.

Old cars are everywhere.....they don't rust where we are. But car prices are very high compared to Britain.

This is the biggest classified site here......so this will give you an idea of what's available.

When my father had his brand new metallic silver Ford Cortina 2.0 GL back in the 70s complete with blue upholstery and dash, our Navy friends had a Ford Capri, John Player Special version done in black and gold, similar to this:

Thanks everso for the pointer to that website, greatly appreciated. A whopping 43 number 405's at the moment, its clearly the place to look and I've carefully filed it away for future reference.

A slight aside just because I find it so incredible: this one in the UK bid to £1,500, with average mileage, spares available but not included in the sale price, Advisories for rot since 2010.... and failed to meet its Reserve. Madness!

I do like this 505 GTi Saloon though, eBay 132733500446, scuse my dribbling :)

There won't be any rot on Spanish ones......but you would have to contend with LHD.

I think I can live with LHD. If I'm feeling really keen, my current car could be used as a RHD Conversion donor, but unlikely to be worth the bother. Change the headlights and leave it at that.

I find that the motorway lane change 'Glance over the Shoulder' is a lot less of a stretch in my RHD abroad so presumably this 'd be a benefit of using a LHD in the UK.

You see the odd Brit RHD converted to ES plates over here (illegal to retain on Brit plates after 3 months or you've become a resident). Impossible to sell them on as they have no value.

My experience of RHD in Spain when I first came here is they're lethal.......you have no vision to overtake when in traffic. So it would be the same in reverse in the UK.

If a re-registered right hander turned up here that would be ideal for you......you'd pick it up for a song.

now, there's a thought! Thank You ! :-D Me thinks a Regular memo to check that website could, over a period of time; be very beneficial indeed.

Lots of re-registered RHD vehicles in this part of Andalucia, despite the frequently €1000+* to get them on to Spanish plates. Brits pretty good at re-registering, good bit better than many Germans and some Swiss, who for some reason seem reluctant to be legal.

Our ex-UK XM has been here for 14 years now, and gets extensive use across Spain and Europe. There isn't an issue with overtaking if you keep a reasonable distance from the vehicle in front (so you're not blocking your own view) and make good use of the LH mirror. No issue whatsover on motorways/dual carriageways.
___________

* Spanish re-plating (re-matriculation) costs do come as a bit of a shock. There is a formula for calculating it, which goes something like this iirc, for vehicles brought in from an EU country (so much for freedom of movement of goods and personal possessions):
Cost = List price of vehicle in €uros when new x 14%** x a discount
** 14% max; depends on engine size
The discount is a sliding scale which kicks in at car age of (I think) 3 years, and reaches 80% max at 10yrs old.
So, anyone silly enough to buy a brand new car in EU, but outside Spain, and bring it into Spain would pay list price x 14% !

Spain have been told by the EU to stop this, and have said (about 10 years ago) that they will.
They just haven't said when.

Contrast all this with UK DVLA's plating fee for private cars being imported, which I think was around £28 a few years back.
