Except that it helps to increase their finances. If a financial house can hold onto money in an account for a few days it will earn them a tiny amount of interest. The interest on £100 for a week might only be a couple of pennies, but do that with a few thousand accounts every week over the course of a year and it is a significant amount.

It's exactly that they benefit (interest) from holding onto the transactions.
Bank have all sped up their processing to be (largely) instant for domestic customers. Meanwhile paypal have slowed theirs down.
