HDi Xantia NOT on death row.. shes fixed.....

Unread post by citroenxm »

Hi all...

Despite me being a BIG fan of the HDi 8v engine, and still rate it the BEST I do have a small issue with my Exclusive, and its a very Dangerous issue too! Im just gonna run it by you others and see if you have any other ideas...

Firstly, what started happening was under heavy accelleration, the engine would suddenly cut out DEAD.... and wont restart again untill the key has been turned off for at least 5 seconds or more... only then she will start and then power returns slowly!

First sugestions were about a yellow plug that sits under the top hose, and to clean it up. I did.. but also I had switched to gentle accelleration... so the cutting out wouldn't happen...

Next now, the car started running on after the key was swtiched off for a good 5 seconds, this also put the management light on, and limit my to 2400 rpm... I knew what this was - the pressure regulator in the end of the engine fuel pump. After a swap of this normal service was resumed. I however, also, while swapping the fuel regulator in the pump I also decided to swap the Throttle Sensor under the LHM tank, the fuel rail pressure sensor in a hope to solve my problem.

So I got braver with the accelleration and hey presto, the cutting out issue is still here! What I have also done as a process of ellimination, I have removed the yellow extension harness, as it only extends the harness to the pressure sensor. However, by cutting a ridge off the Red Plug it can be plugged into the sensor DIRECTLY!

With all this in mind, tonight was a real dangerous one, as I pulled off a round a bout with traffic on my left, foot down - BANG stop! in the outside lane!! ?? So, all I could do was coast into the left lane right in front of the car behind, then while slowly reducing speed, trying to get the thing going again I finally got her going, and managed to get going... after that, she went brilliantly, as always ... Its just the initiale foot down!

So, where do I look now?? The parts Ive changed have all come off a PERFECT engine that didnt cut out...

So what do we think, the cars main loom??? Something else?? Time to retire??? (The car that is)...

Shes only got 225k on her... I have got replacment harness I can fit...... if she needs..

Have you tried unplugging the tuning box you have on it Paul? I recall reading somewhere about someone with a C5 having similar issues due to a duff tuning box.

Got to get it on the Lexia and see what the live data is doing....

Rail under / over pressure, earth fault, could be anything really unfortunately!

Been there done that.. nothing obvious shows up to me... figures all look fine, all that happens when i put my foot down the pressure ref goes up and while the actual fuel pressure rises pop stop ... the fault recorded is " fuel pressure reference LOST " so the Ecu is loseing where the throttle is.. the throttle on it now is off a faultless engine...

It does sound like a fuel problem, pressure sensor?

If this were a petrol, I'd suspect the throttle position sensor. As I have no real clue about these HDI motors, I can't help, but it sounds like something electrical to me.

Paul have you looked in the HDi diagnosis manual to work through the flow chat according to whatever fault/s are recorded? If not this could take a fair bit of tracking down. What particular fault/s including codes are listed?

You'll also need a matcching key.

The diagnosis manual is a separate book, I'll dig one out tomorrow and see what I can find, if you could identify the exact code that will help a fair bit as I fear they may be several fuel pressure flow charts according to the exact code recorded.
