Haven't had the filter out yet, my take on it is that the filter will catch it - trouble only starts when you lift the filter element out, then the crap falls into the bottom (clean) side of the filter - unless you remove the housing and tip it out, then the crap is on the 'wrong' side of the filter. Mind you, it could probably do with a new filter - I fitted a new housing a couple (?) of years ago as the old one was leaking somewhere.

EML went out after a couple of starts. Car seems to go better with new pump, but I might be imagining that....
Appears to be just over 2 years since I changed the filter (so about 30k), according to this: Filter change did it on my birthday too, some present that must have been!!
