Forum server settings changed

Due to excessive server loading caused by some badly behaved 'bots' (automated content collectors), I have changed the anti-ddos settings on the site to be much more aggressive.

This has had the desired effect of reducing the server loading from 100% to about 10% (the other 90% was coming from just 8 IP addresses located in China).

Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I heard a week ago that Laurie passed away early in January this year.

He had been ill for just over a year.

I'm going to move the servers back to the more powerful machine at 7:30.
Hopefully there won't be much of an outage.
I'll need to use the maintenance page for a while before hand and take a backup of the database.
It will be quicker that way, as rather than copying the virtual server file across (20GB, approx 30 minutes to copy)

Sorry about the prolonged outage today, I was stuck on a train heading back from london with no phone signal so I couldn't get on to resolve the issue.

There may be one more outage a bit later while I test things are ok.

Jim very kindly dropped round the UPS last night so tonight I'll be connecting it up to the server and testing.

This means there will be a few outages this evening from 8pm

Hopefully there will only be two, one for connecting the server to the UPS, and another as a test power outage.

We had a couple of server crashes; one last evening at 19:30 and another this morning at 06:00.

Webfusion were aware and had problems. One crash later (that i did not see) corrupted both the FCF and BXC databases.

Luckily a low-level repair on the affected table worked and we're back in business.

I have very recent backups should it happen...

At the risk of teaching grandad....

I have in the past encountered a good many UPSs that have failed to do their stuff when needed. Leaving aside those where users expect the UPS to keep a PC running for hours or it's under-rated:

- The batteries in UPSs tend to need to be replacing every couple of years - test off-line with a spare 'load'...

I'm aware that the forum server is now throwing it's toys with a bit of worrying regularity.

I'm busy investigating why. It looks like a memory leak in IIS7 stemming from a known issue between it and PHP.

As a temporary fix I'll be setting the IIS worker threads to recycle on a regular basis to clear down the memory they are holding.

The new forum mail server is a bit cleverer than the old one..

If the forum sends an email to an invalid address the mail server returns a bounce result code to the forum and it seems phpBB2 does not quite know how to handle it and takes the default route of doing an electronic shrug, sulking and issuing a debug message that...

The migration to the new forum webserver went successfully this morning :D :D

All is now back to normal. Please let me know of any funnies you might see as some small bits of fine tuning may be needed over the coming days.

Let's hope it lasts longer than the last new server did :lol:

Webfusion say it has a bigger Internet pipe than Kevin Bloody Wilson's mouth Adam, so that may be one reason for the speed.

Looked at Aussiefrogs the other day. It was so slow here as to be almost unusable. Maybe as you say, relaxing in the QLD sunshine whilst ours is running around trying to keep warm...

Following a very successful migration of the forum its new home on Tuesday morning, the new server that I had carefully tested and configured months before the carefully planned migration failed on Wednesday.

After many calls to the host (Webfusion) they admitted that our webhost server was down to be migrated to a new datacentre in Germany and...

The new server is all ready to go, appears good, so we will be moving to it tomorrow morning. As said, I'll be doing it in the small hours.

You'll know the migration has been successful as the spotty favicon will be replaced by a double chevron...

At long last, the FCF (and BXC) are both in the process of being rebuilt on a new, dedicated server. In the process, both forums will be upgraded to the latest phpBB3 forum software and the forum databases will move from under my stairs to the dedicated server.

The old webserver proved unsuitable for the upgrade and also proved resistant to...

Some of you will have noticed that the forums were inaccessible during the late afternoon and early evening today.
This was due to to a problem with our web hosts and beyond our control.
Fortunately they managed to remedy the error fairly quickly and access restored at approximately 19:00 GMT.

In preparation for the migration of the forum to phpBB3 software, we will shortly be embarking on an exercise to clean up the forum memberlist database so that we take a nice clean one across.

The move to phpBB3 will be made as the current phpBB2 software is no longer supported, particularly for security patches, and phpBB3 will offer some nice...

Host one on Photobucket, make sure it is less than 120 x 120 pixels and less than 6kb, you can use imaging software such as The Gimp or Irfanview to reduce larger images, also I think Photobucket now can deal with it too.

Sorry for the very long outage :oops: My internet link died and I was away in Somerset at the time.

I returned home ASAP to fix. Whilst it was down I took the opportunity to do my yearly server maintenance, most of which involves removing it to the workshop and blowing an unbelievable amount of dust out...

Sorry for the short outange near midnight local time. This was due to an extended power fail and I needed to shut down the system after the system ran on UPS power for 45 minutes and the batteries were near-flat.

Many of you will have noticed the forum was a bit off-colour last evening and most of today.

I cannot tell a lie, it was I. I did something silly on it :oops:

So well did I wreck it, I had to call the host Tech. Support line and have them give our server a very firm talking to. They did and all seems good again.
