Xantia clutch adjustment

Post by hswift »

Checking the clutch adjustment on my 98 Xantia 1.8 16v (pre facelift), I see there's no adjuster on the cable end. (A new clutch and cable were fitted 20k miles ago and this is the first time I've done the servicing myself.) Has someone fitted the wrong cable, or do these later Xantias have a self-adjusting clutch not picked up by the Haynes manual?

Self adjust mechanism is in the centre of the cable, near the steering rack, on a 1.9TD and 2.0 16v at least.

I bought a cable from a local garage, when i went to pick it up it was the wrong one although the supplier insists it was correct. The original on the car is just a straight cable with a cone shaped nipple at one end and a thread on the other. The cable supplied had the nipple at one end, a large chunk of cylindrical plastic in the centre (1" dia and 6" long) and no thread on the other, just a cone looking end. I snet it back and buying one elsewhere with the thread on the end. Any comments / suggestions? Gaz
