Certainly sounds like the starter motor/solenoid, assuming self contained, may be the problem rather than the BPGA to me Matt!! :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Yes, starter motor is now removed from the car. Thank goodness it's not a DV6 where the damn things on the back!

Solenoid is indeed knackered on the Lucas.

Going to see if I can get the ex- c5 starter into place. After quick visual to confirm number of teeth etc

If the dog is different or even the mounting doesn't match could you swap the solenoid over? :)

13 teeth on each so fitting it as is current plan.

Starter is on the car...

And here comes the rain again

Cleaned up terminals and a subtle change.

Makes sense to me!

Spoiler: show
fuses are clear on one side, opaque the other. Swapped over to clear side = can see if any are blown, visual!
Don't understand why put in the other way up by default!?

I'm guessing the fuses are the other way up simply for colour ID purposes? :)
Ie to cater for dyslexic auto electricians :rofl2:

But not the colour blind ones :rofl2: (that's not a suitable career path, surely)

They were a random selection of ways up so the poor dyslexics might also have trouble with the "09" fuse next to the 70 and 125 either side of it.

All back together. Battery reconnected. Giving it a few minutes to "get settled" and then will see what happens with the key.

Raining constantly. Thoroughly damp so a positive outcome would be VERY welcome indeed!

Will wash up and dry off then see what happens next.

Interestingly us GPO telephone engineering apprentices had to pass a colour blindness test before going on to the maths test and interviews for the job!! :-D
Fingers crossed!! :-D

Yes,
  • Original BPGA (cleaned up contacts and OCD pacifying fuse orientation)
  • "New" starter motor which is the C5 unit that I cleaned up when having all my run for a fraction of a second issues with it. The mitsubishi starter I replaced with a new, bigger unit, on the C5, so this has been in my "spares pile" since then.
Fantastically pleased. Thanks all for the "test the starter first" suggestions earlier.

I'm amazed it has suddenly failed without warning like that, but seems that's the case.

I wonder if my very occasional "Electrical Fault Have vehicle repaired" message will:
Never come back
Or
Make another appearance at some point?

BPGA was mooted as a possible for that.

I'll give it another Diagbox session when I get chance (likely Thursday evening at the earliest) and see if the "Relay contacts open" or whatever it was fault codes, have gone or come back again....

For future reference, here's my starter clean up:

(Paint job definitely suffered a few years in damp (406 Coupe's) boot!)
