c5 x7 1.6hdi airlock

Post by Pavl »

After some very gentle driving (not normal procedure for me) and a day in southern French heat with aircon on all the time .,.....
Driving conditions hilly and winding with downhill overruns at "999" km per litre.
.....Parked in garage overnight.
Next morning thing starts as normal but only goes for one minute then dies with that generic depollution warning light. Going up a fairly steep turn.
Would not restart for more than a few seconds.
Rolled back down into garage (had to use starter motor to "drive" the last bit to under cover.)
Complete refusal to fire despite engine cranking at very good speed.
Today had a think ...... unlocked fuel tank cap and heard great gurgles and bubbles etc. When that stopped engine would start again.
No work done on fuel system.
Fuel filter replaced over a year ago.
Airdoser replaced two years ago.

Wondered if anyone has thoughts ?

Always used to drive "vigorously" with revs up on long autoroute runs.
MOT pollution always very good.
Aside ..... refurb steering rack doing fine .....

Crap in the fuel tank comes to mind. Especially as I think you indicate the issues are more prevalent when going up steep inclines. Do you tend to run the vehicle on fumes or very low fuel levels? Not generally a good idea if you do as this can cause any muck to get into the fuel system including the diesel bugs:

Thank you Marc
Good call ..... but ......
Always keep fuel level up (ex LandRover owner .... so knew about fuel sludge),
Has over a quarter now ....... going to brim it soon as poss and drive a bit more "firmly".
The starting issue continued on flat ground ...... but since de-bubbling tank it has started and run twice without any hiccups or hesitation.
Day prior was very hot (but no higher than last torture test which was north Eastern France to southern France with over 40 showing external, fully laden, aircon flat out, with most of the cars in Belgium going south.)
Was wondering if long downhills with trailing throttle made a contribution to fuel flow (or lack) and left a vacuum somewhere ?
Never run like that before but reason for "Miss Daisy" driving is my stroke earlier this year, so trying to calm down a bit!

I have had a similar problem for about a year now, I have replaced part of the fuel line and tried all sorts of other things but I cured it yesterday (I hope) Seams to be fine now. The problem turned out to be a leaking fuel filter housing, couldn't find a leak in the old one but its OK at the moment.

The symptoms were, if you left it standing for a few days it wouldn't start unless you bled it, then after a couple of hundred yards it would stop again and you had to bleed it again. Eventually it got so bad that every time you opened the throttle wide it stopped. There was no air visible going into the filter but looking at the clear section on the output side there were great gulps of ail when you revved it - not now.

Nice one Peter.

As Paul has replaced his fuel filter a year ago - could be that it's not sealed properly - but a good place to start.

So I was wrong ....... test drive a complete fail.
Engine starts a runs on the flat, revs above 2k.
Uphill out and it wont pull ...... erratic ... hesitant .... gutless... but will continue to run. Revving to 3k but no pull.
Turned round after a couple of minutes and now parked again.
Getting a diagnostic chap out next week.
By the way ..... what and where is that clear bit in the fuel line ?
Cannot get to French book just now ......
No fuel on ground .... clean floor.

If and when you get any fault codes, put them up along with your VIN and I'll see what they relate to.

The clear bit in the fuel line is so you can see if there is any air getting in the fuel. If you were to see bubbles in the clear pipe air is getting in.

Turns out to be either ..... fuel pump.....its pressure regulator ...... or a sticky injector.
The machine he uses gives text output in French with codes for his software.
He arrived with recovery truck so took the C5 away.
The saga continues........

The codes should be the same regardless, so if you have them, pop them up with your VIN if you want to know what they are for your own benefit.

Here you go:
Fault Code: P0483
Description of Fault: Cooling Function Incorporated in the ECU ( electric cooling fan unit): Open circuit. The line is in open circuit for more than 5 seconds.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: Diminution of the coolant temperature thresholds to cut the aircon compressor.
Symptoms:
  • The cooling fan to operate permanently at maximum speed
  • Battery discharged
Suspect Areas:
  • Electric cooling fan unit
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector

Fault Code: P0193
Description of Fault: Fuel pressure signal: Open circuit or short circuit to the plus. The fault appears if the voltage of the fuel pressure signal is greater than the maximum threshold of 4,8 V for 40 milliseconds or 2 engine revs.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Engine stopped
  • Deactivation of the reporting of faults associated with the high-pressure fuel injection common rail pressure
  • Limitation of pressure in the fuel high pressure common injection rail
Symptoms:
  • Hesitation / Timing
  • Unwanted acceleration
  • Noise
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Lack of power
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
  • Fuel high pressure sensor
  • Engine ECU

Fault Code: P1166
Description of Fault: High pressure fuel regulation: Measured rail pressure higher than the maximum pressure. Pressure of the fuel high pressure common injection rail measured higher than the maximum pressure (for 5 seconds).
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Engine stopped
  • Irreversible cutting of the cruise control
  • Deactivation of automatic mode for the electronic parking brake
  • Deactivation of the speed limiter
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Jerking/stalling
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical Harness
  • Connectors
  • High pressure fuel pump
  • Fuel flow regulator
  • Low pressure fuel circuit
  • Fuel filter
  • Engine ECU
  • High Pressure Fuel Sensor

Thank you Marc.
What incredible detail.
As far as I know one of the issues is now solved but am waiting for a reply to second part.
All happening via z third party I'm afraid.

Strange how different manufacturers use the same codes .... just seen an American talking about a US vehicle with P0193.
