Peugeot 405 coolant type

Post by homr »

Hello all,

Sorry I'm sure this has been asked before, but what sort of coolant do I require in a 1995 Peugeot 405? Due to the age of the car, would this require silicate IAT type coolant?

Halfords is recommending OAT type but I'm not convinced by this.

The Haynes manual isn't great as it just mentions ethylene-glycol based, but I believe IAT and OAT are both ethylene-glycol based?

Thanks,
John

You haven't specified the VIN so I can't see what engine you have.

Earlier types pre-2000 tended to list:
Else PROCOR 3000
or
Coolant REVKO Gel

As I understand it the above are diluted with de-ionised water. Procor 3000 was diluted 50% with water at factory to provide -35° C protection.

But if not sure, contact your Peugeot dealer for confirmation.

Thank you for your reply!

The VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

So your model was built 13th February 1995. This is a little early for specific data on coolant used, so I can't help you with this as most of the data relates to later models from March 1996. So best check with your Peugeot dealer to see what they suggest, as there's likely to be a later equivalent or substitute.

If you're topping up you need the same type as is already in there. Due to age of the car, that could be anything. As far as I'm aware, if your doing a complete flush and refill it doesn't matter, so whatever is easily available. If your doing a complete flush turn the cabin heater to hot to open the heater matrix so that gets flushed also.

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

Thank all, I'll see what Peugeot can suggest.

Looking at Halfords, they suggest an OAT type for this car although the car seems a little old for this type.

Another question on this, I'm a complete newbie here!

The top and bottom radiator hoses, do I need to twist to release them or use a flathead screwdriver to lift up the locking tabs:
