Engine_ A/C condenser fan on C5X7 (RHF) problem

Post by Gregor »

Hi.

I have an issue with A/C condenser fan not starting (sometimes) when A/C switched on. Fan seems to be o.k. since usually spins when A/C is on and also starts when coolant reaches 94 °C. But more and more often I notice that after stoping the car (idling), fan is not working and A/C is also blowing "hot" air. I think it has to be some relay issue.. Any ideas, anyone?

update...

Following codes popped out today: P0691 and P0692 (Engine coolant blower motor 1 - circuit low and high)... Testing fan at high speed with FAP SW on my phone, makes fan spinning but sends back Open circuit msg.

Hi Gregor.
So be careful - as this may lead to overheating. I would not use the A/C or the car unnecessarily with these errors - until you fix the issue.

P0691: Fast speed cooling fan control: Open circuit. You may notice the following - Fan unit at high speed, Water temperature warning, Engine overheating.

Whilst you get this error, the following downgrade modes are in operation:
  • Deactivation of the air conditioning function
  • Deactivation of the forced regeneration of the particle emission filter
  • Reduction in the activation thresholds for the coolant temperature alert
P0692: Fast speed cooling fan control: Short circuit to + battery. The ECU detects a short-circuit to the battery plus for 5 seconds.

Whilst you get this error, the following downgrade modes are in operation:
  • Air conditioning deactivation
  • Deactivation of the forced regeneration of the particle emission filter
  • Reduction in the activation thresholds for the coolant temperature alert
Suspect Areas
  • Cooling fan harness
  • Connector
So I would look at the fan harness or the relay in the same area as the fan as soon as you can. These can get water ingress into the units and corrode or just fail over time.

Thank you Mark for your prompt response!

I have been trying to access fan, but seem that removal of front bumper is needed for that... I assume it's not the relay issue since those usually fail in closed or opened position... From my previous experience with Xsara i suspect the brushes on fan motor since it has 250 kkm on the clock. Do you maybe know if it is sealed unit or it is possible to change them?

Thx Gregor

These are sealed units on this particular engine (DW10BTED4), with the harness connecting directly onto the fan with a separate relay.

The front bumper does not need taking off. I'll put some instructions up for you shortly....

Replacing Cooling Fan on the Citroen C5 X7 DW10BTED4 engine only.

Removing

Make sure the vehicle is lifted up on supports, ideally on a ramp (I would raise the suspension to the highest setting, but make sure the vehicle is still supported independently to avoid sudden depressurisation!)

When in position, follow the battery disconnection part of the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure.

CAUTION: After the ignition has been switched off: Wait 15 minutes before disconnecting the battery to ensure that the programmed values of the various ECUs are stored.
Fan A.PNG
Fan B.PNG
Remove the bolts (1) ( each side).
If necessary remove the front splash-shields.
Remove:
  • The bolts (2)
  • The air deflector (under the bumper)
Fan C.PNG
Fan D.PNG
Remove the bolts (4) (Fan (3)).
Detach: The cooling fan (3).
Disconnect the connectors ( as "a").
Remove the fan (3) (Downwards).

CAUTION: Mark the routing of the fan harness.

Refitting

Reconnect the connectors ( as "a").
Refit:
  • The cooling fan (3)
  • The bolts (4). Tighten the bolts (2) to 0,8 ± 0,1 m.daN
  • The air deflector (under the bumper)
  • The bolts (2)
Reposition: The front splash shields (if necessary).

Refit:
  • The bolts (1)
  • The protective panel under the engine (according to equipment)
Finally follow the reconnection procedure of the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure.
