C5 x7 v6 TTD Engine overheating
Is there a valve in the cooling system that can be faulty and shut off the coolant to flow all the way through the engine ????

What are the faults / symptoms? There was a modification to the cooling outlet housing on Euro 5 vehicles, relating to incidents with the engine coolant temperature sensor.

I just rechecked and it does refer to the EP engines you are correct -so ignore that one.

My wife phoned me from 5 klms away and said a warning sign had come up on the instrument , STOP ENGINE OVERHEATING .
I said drive home slowly and I will look for problem .
I had to add 5 litres of coolant to the tank after engine cooled , which seems a lot as it holds about 10 litres full .
I couldn't see a leak and today after a shopping trip I checked again and the plastic tank was empty . I thought the worse that a head gasket may have gone and the coolant was blowing out the exhaust !!
Decided to do an engine oil change as it was due at 170000 klm . Upon removing the large plastic tray under the engine I noticed cooling fluid on tray and now ran onto the garage floor .
Has anyone had a leak from their C5 X7 V6 3.0 L around the rear ?? of the engine as I have not found the source yet ??

Have a look at the diagram below Hayden. Let me know which suspected area 'A' to 'E' the leak is coming from, bearing in mind gravity - so the source of the leak. You may need to take a few pics, dry the area up, then watch for the leak again to get the source.

I have found the leak and it is in a very hard to access position . I will try and attach photos and the rough sketch I did .
It appears to be leaking from a black plastic housing position under the front injection manifold and directly behind the yellow handle of dip stick .
The cooling fluid was dripping from the lower mounting screw head , there are two hoses connected , the smaller one leads forward to an aluminium pipe . I think this housing may be located into the cast iron block with a spigot !!!?? this may be where it is leaking . The housing is above the air con compressor ! I don't know what to remove to get at this black housing . It would be unlikely that the screw needs tightening , which would be extremely hard without removing something . Hope you have some ideas please !!

Ok, so if it is on the timing face, the likely culprit can be the water pump tot he Cylinder block.

Thanks for this info and help Marc but I think it is really tucked in behind the EGR exchanger . It is black plastic sort of oval shape and I can only see one mounting screw looking up from the ground as shown in the photo . It must have a name which would show in a proper manual !
Can you recommend a workshop manual for this vehicle as there are various companies selling paper and online manuals .

The problem is trying to localise it and then I can provide some likely leak suspects areas around those places.

It sounds like the leak is from the front EGR cooler.

Not sure if the same applies to the 3.0 but I guess it will...
On a 2.7 in the area below the EGR and above the alternator (where you have drawn) is the water inlet manifold.
A common fault on the 2.7 at around 8-10 years old along with the thermostat housing on the top of the engine.
If you haven't renewed either I would recommend doing both at the same time.
I am however assuming the X7 is the same as the C6!
