Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi won't start

Post by stefan307 »

Hi one and all,
I have had the car,2996 model since 2012 and it has been a great car.Reliable and cheap to run as you all know,I think.
Unfortunately 2 weeks ago the wife filled it with unleaded.Spent $60to drain tank etc,no idea if the fuel filter was replaced but I presume it was.
Car come back fine and ran well for about a week but now it's a struggle to start it.By using Aerostart it starts within seconds but without it it takes possibly longer than 30 seconds. When the engine is running it goes as well as it has ever did.
Local mechanic is suggesting to replace injectors but i don't know what to believe,
Has anyone here had any experience similar to this? can you help?
thank you for taking the time to read this, hopefully someone will have some answers....

Not good. I've only ever had this issue with a new 2.0 HDI Xantia II - problem with the garage and wrong fuel at the pump.

Broke down 4 times before I got it home. Managed to get it to my garage for a drain and clean, but it was stuffed and needed a new fuel pump assembly (in tank), plus a thorough flush and clean of the injection system. Being a high pressure common rail (HDi) and having it filled with petrol, the mechanic was amazed it hadn't exploded!

I suspect your 307 also has an in-tank pump, so it's possible that has been damaged. Once the new pump was installed the car behaved correctly and I never had any further issues.

You haven't said whether the engine was run after putting petrol in it and, if so, for how long.

Ok so confirmed Stefan that you don't have an in-tank pump - just the sender gauge on your 2.0 HDi 138.

So I would be looking at flushing the fuel system through and changing the fuel filter for sure.

Hi Marc,
Thanks for the infos.
The wife drove the car for about 1 t0 2 km she thinks after filling it up,there was about 1/4 of the tank at refueling
I have changed the fuel filter today but did not make any difference much but the filter needed replacing all the same.
I started the car again without the Aerostart and it took about 20 seconds before it fired up and then ran well on the drive home, about 10 minutes.the older mechanic that I took the car to,is very honest but not all that familiar with the modern cars but ran the scanner on the car and came back with codes 1446 and 1351 which I will look up now hoping to get to the end of this.
I still find it strange that once the engine is running the car is actually fine.
I will monitor this site over the next few days while still trying to fix it, meanwhile I'd like to thank all the people that took the time to read my post and the ones that contributed advice.

Ok, so the fault codes mean the following:

P1351 - not so important, as a common fault on just about every HDI - it means the glow plug relay is supplied, but that the plugs themselves are not. Not so important - it just means one or more glow plugs aren't working.

The P1446 error means there is insufficient diesel additive in the additive tank for the particulate filter shown for a 10 second period. So when was the additive reservoir last topped up and what is the mileage? It might therefore need refilling and the additive counter resetting with a suitable diagnostic tool.

I have topped up the bladder last year when the car had about 180k on the clock, the Peugeot dealer was asking $560 plus $35 delivery for the replacement bladder,I bought a ! litre container from England for about $65 delivered and did it myself, but could not find anyone in the area to reset the computer, message comes on for about 3 seconds at start up and then goes away.Still no luck starting the car, will try another mechanic ......

When topping up the additive - it's always best to fill it up - get a 3Lt or 3 x 1Lt bottles to ensure it is full and then reset the counter.

Good point Marc, but local mechanics could not erase the message on the display screen. Here in Australia the the additive is not readily available, unlike Europe, the bladder was eventually filled, although I was worried for awhile that the message on the screen may cause the car to go in limp mode

I wonder if the petrol/diesel mix has caused damage in the high pressure fuel pump, meaning that there is not quite enough pressure at cranking speed to fire the injectors properly.
