C5 X7 surgery this weekend

Post by jgra1 »

hi all, possibly some surgery to the 2010 C5 163 exclusive

4 years ago this week - I bought the car with a nakk'd engine (turbo and oil pump fail), and set about replacing the powerunit. inc Cambelt kit, filters etc

Since then, I have replaced the rear calipers (with used items), replaced the rear discs and pads, and done 2 or 3 oil changes, added some tyres and I think that's it.

Issues I notice now are :
An odd feeling from the rack/pinion at slow/no speed - sort of juddering (this will have to wait for now)
Rack input shaft (possible leak, I don't want to look to much! - this will have to wait)
Gearbox issues
An MOT advise on nearside/upper/inner suspension arm bushes (part of the upper strut mount)
Front nearside disc that 'grabs' every revolution when slowing down
Offside CV joint tapping on full lock

the plan this weekend is CV joint, discs and pads, and if possible one or both sides of the upper arm bushes.

I assume :
I can knock the CV joint off (I haven't done one before!)
I need to depressurise the hydraulics (I have diagnostics)

I worry:
that the new joint has no ABS ring... ?

any help, support, pointers would be very welcome :) despite my short post, I have think I am ok with most of this really.. the ABS ring was a surprise though.. even 2nd hand driveshafts on ebay don't appear to show a ring.. having never replaced a joint before, I thought it would come ready to go

The discs weight a lot, the pads are £50! and the total bill including LDS is already £250, ouch

ABS ring is built into the wheel bearing.

There are different makes of shaft fitted to X7s, and some of them have non removable outer CV joints. There's a post on here somewhere with the makes listed - worth checking yours is a removable type before stripping it down.....

thanks very much Richard. will have a look

'Seemingly there are 3 types of shaft fitted, GKN, PSA, or NTN. There should be a label on the shaft showing which it is - but only PSA and NTN shafts have removable CV joints'

2 discs and 1 cv joint - done. Quite a long haul for some reason.. it took over an hour just to get the car safely off the ground! and the best part of both days to complete.
The intermediate came out a lot easier than last time, and with a bit of a tidy-up and some heat, went back in a lot easier :)

The pads and discs were pretty good, which was disappointing - but at least they don't grab now.

The tri-ax joint came apart only after I had fitted the new CV joint.. I would recommend anyone just buying a new driveshaft to be honest! it was satisfying but ultimately a crap decision :)

The nightmare bushes in the upper arms will just have to wait for another time.
