Hi all,
My Xsara Picasso's clutch has been on the heavy side and juddery on take up of drive for quite a while, and is now starting to slip on harsh acceleration in 2nd/3rd, so it needs replacing. My question is, as this is the first car I've owned with a hydraulic clutch: do garages routinely [advise to] replace the slave (release) cylinder at the same time as the clutch or in your experience do you have to make sure you ask for it? I'm sure a reputable garage would assess and advise case by case, but I thought I'd ask. I'm pretty sure I had a new clutch cable as routine part of clutch replacement on my old BX and GSA. I've read it's routine to replace the newer concentric slave cylinders that sit next to the release bearing inside the housing, but this car has the older external type pressing onto a clutch fork. The car's done around 65,000 and I believe it's the original clutch.
Cheers,
Mark

No need to change an external slave as it is easily accessible if it does give trouble.

Re: Picasso 1.6 16V clutch advice
I've just been quoted £760 for a new clutch by a local independent Cit garage! Plus £60 if the slave is found to be leaking and needs replacing. The quote included new fork, driveshaft and diff oil seals... I've had another quote from Mr Clutch: £287.72 for fitting clutch kit, including VAT...

Personally I would steer very well clear of Mr. Clutch! Did the independent say if that included a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) or not? Do you know if your car has one? The perceived wisdom is that, as a DMF can wear out, it makes sense to replace it at the same time as you replace the clutch, as if it were to fail later you would have to pay labour (probably the same as for the clutch change) and possibly for another clutch.

She is petrol so Im not sure she has a DMF. A luk clutch kit would be under £100 for that car so I'd have thought £350-400 would be reasonable price. Mr Clutch's cousin has branches in Ireland poor materials and indifferent standard of work, I'd agree with Hell Razor
