2004 Berlingo Heater Hose Replacement

Post by Blazer811 »

Hi All, just when I thought I had my cooling problems sorted and was taking it for a run to confirm that I did, my temp gauge skyrocketed to the top.

I opened the hood to investigate and noticed the heater hose has broken off at the firewall end. I have never seen this type of connection before and need some advice, tips and helpful knowledge on how to replace it.

Thank you in advance

Thanks Marc bit fo I have to remove the dash to get these hoses off? If not how are they connected to the heater unit?

I don't have a specific guide on this specific model, but you shouldn't need to remove the dash. You should be able to get access from under the passenger side. The pipes will come through and clamp onto the matrix, but of course the coolant needs to be drained first and there will be some coolant still in the matrix, so could be messy.

Unfortunately for me I’m in Australia and the pipes are on the drivers side 😬

They don't change the heater layout based on LHD / RHD. The heater system is the same layout for both and you have a Right Hand Drive same as over here.

Thanks Marc but you have me confused as the pic of the heater hoses I attached are clearly on the Drivers side next to the Brake booster?

This should be doable from the engine side - the pipes are clipped onto the matrix outlet. Exactly how varies, but it should be fairly obvious with a close look.

Thanks Richard and I do agree with what you have said, it only seems logical that if you had to replace the hose, it shouldn’t require you to take the whole dash apart.

There seems to be some kind of lever between the two hoses that appears to be locking these hoses in place. I unlocked the lever and did try to pull the black plastic unit that’s connected onto the matrix pipes but it’s pretty much fitted tightly on to the matrix, probably the O rings.

I have bypassed the heater for now until I can get proper verification on how to remove them if the matrix

-6 here this morning, no bypassing heaters here!!

That arrangement is widely used by PSA - it's a well known sticking point in the Xantia matrix replacement process. Usual advice is to get the thing hot and do it under pressure, but you don't have that option now. Perhaps getting it hot by pouring hot water over it, and then gently levering from behind to release it. Best not to break the matrix outlet as I expect that is a dash out job...
