C5 x7 brake pedal

Post by atr »

Hi
Last thursday suddenly my brake pedal went low while pressing it . it still stopped the vehicle but was somehow "spongy", after a few minutes, it came back to it's normal position. last night it appeared once again. is it possible that it caused by worn brake pad (so they have more space to travel)?
Thanx.

Have you checked the brake fluid level? Sponginess is usually cased by the master cylinder trying to pump air.

If the fluid level has dropped, it could be due to worn pads, or there could be a leak somewhere, it is best to check for these before topping up, as repairing would cause the loss of more fluid.

Intermittent long travel on the brake pedal (without fluid loss) can also be caused by excessive play in wheel bearings, but that is rare in modern cars.

I've checked the brake fluid level. it's the correct level. what seems odd to me is the fact that it appears for a short period of time and then it disappears for another few days. there are no signs of leakage and the proof that there are no leaks, is the fact that the fluid level dosn't drops.

Hi
I've bought the vehicle almost a year ago. it wasn't during my ownership and I doubt if it was done in the last few years.

In general, a brake pedal that sometimes goes too low is caused by air in the brake lines, or failing master cylinder seals or play in a wheel bearing which is allowing the disk to wobble, knocking the pads back.

The possibilities that you've pointed are making sense, of course, but would those being the case, wouldn't the problem exists permanently? the point is that the problem appears about once a week, or so and then disappears for another few days.
