Advice needed - clutch/dmf 2014 C4 Grand Picasso

Post by Andy+Tiff »

Hi Everyone,

We are just after a little advice. We have a 2014 C4 Picasso Grand E-HDI Airdream VTR which has nearly done 30k miles. We've had it since Jan 2018.
We noticed the engine seemed to rev too high when accelerating and if you back off on the accelerator and go through the gears gently it seemed OK. Anyway it was in the garage this Monday having the rear brake pads done and we asked the garage to take a look. They ran the diagnostics and told us the clutch is slipping and needs replacing. Then when we went to collect we were told the flywheel needs replacing as well.
What we are concerned about is it seems that considering the mileage and age of the car is it reasonable to think that it would need this doing?
Has anyone else's had this problem or is it a common problem for this model. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, and :welc: to the forum. My first suggestion is that you post up here the VIN (which will be obscured so only Forum staff can read it) so a Moderator can look it up and see what she had when she rolled out of the factory.

Does the car have a towbar? It is not unknown for a vehicle with a towbar and a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) to have the clutch/DMF fail within a few years of manufacture, as it had been used to tow a caravan with a braking system. These brakes work on a plunger style of system, in that when the plunger is pressed the brakes on the caravan come on. This plunger is on the towing eye arm, so when you apply the brakes on the car the weight of the caravan pushes in the towing arm, putting the brakes on. Unfortunately, when you are reversing with the caravan attached it causes the brakes on the caravan to come on, so the car is pushing against more 'weight' than it was designed to do, causing more wear on the clutch and flywheel than would otherwise occur.

No the car hasn't got or had a tow bar. I have the Vin number, whereabouts do I put it? In this message or my original post. Sorry not used a forum like this before.

Yes, Dual Mass Flywheels should nearly always be replaced whenever a new clutch is fitted - simply on labour costs alone - as the same DMF will rarely outlive a new clutch, meaning you'll have to spend all that money on the same labour again.

Clutch slip will be noticed when accelerating harder in higher gears (if you have a piloted / EGS system manually change gear to 5th or 6th and floor it) - that's when you'll notice the increase in engine revs without the instant increase in speed straight away.

Certain driving habits like resting your foot, however lightly on the clutch (manual gearbox) and any towing will shorten the life of the clutch / DMF/. So will driving in higher gears inappropriately for lower speeds like 40-50-60 as the torque is being put through the DMF unnecessarily causing longer stress on the DMF springs. Smooth driving in the correct gear for the speed will help with life expectancy on the clutch / DMF and the wallet!

What mileage is that?

It’s just under 30k miles. Just want to get a feel from people if they think it sounds about right having to replace the clutch/DMF at this stage in the cars life.
If it does then we’ll get it done obviously. But after talking to customer services they said they “may” be able to do some goodwill but only after it’s been diagnosed at an official Citroen garage. Which will cost £324.
I’ve read a few posts on other forums where there’s been recalls on the 2014 C4GP for the clutch pedal and clutch master cylinder.
Not sure how much it relates to our issue.

A well known issue on earlier Citroen's is the clutch can be rather lazy to self adjust - which can give a slipping clutch. Mine has been slipping on and off for years, I normally get it to adjust up by giving it some 'abuse' :) No idea if the design had been improved by 2014 though.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Ok, so a couple of things, first in common with another member with this model and engine when I was checking a part yesterday, your vehicle has an outstanding recall on it - so I would contact your dealer in any case and get the recall work done regardless:

"An after-sales campaign must be carried out on this vehicle. Advise your client to make an appointment with their authorised dealer as soon as possible"

I can't tell you what it concerns - but it will be cost-free to you.

Back to the Clutch / DMF issue:

Ok, so you have a manual 6 speed gearbox - non-piloted on this:

Part numbers and prices (inc. VAT)
9800109880 new DMF £662.99
1649615980 recon DMF £625.49

1610211580 New clutch kit £413.02
1610212980 Exchange kit £274.75

The DMFs have a £200 refundable surcharge and the Clutch a £44 surcharge.

This will give you an idea of the parts prices alone at the dealer as of today, so expect anything between £1200-£1500 with the labour and VAT on the labour. But don't forget to get your recall sorted either way - I believe the member who reported back after I informed him yesterday said his recall was in relation to 'Drive Belts & Tensioner'.

Good luck

Awesome thanks for your feedback. We weren't aware that there was a recall for the Drive Belt and Tensioner as well. Beginning of August we just had that fixed as it had gone and the alternator belt went. £200 we had to pay to get that done.
I've called the garage and will be arranging to get the other recall work done which is for the clutch pedal and master cylinder.

I would factor in the cost of replacing your Dual Mass Flywheel whilst you are at it as this may also be the cause and will very rarely outlast a new clutch. As the labour costs are extensive, it is always recommended to replace the DMF at the same time.
