Problem is I'm a courier and nowhere likes to hire to couriers. I'm going down there tomorrow to find out exactly what's going on

It ended up being the timing chain. Apparently it was one of the worst they've ever seen without actually wrecking the engine. It was a nightmare getting it sorted out and won't bore you with the facts but now it's fixed and sounds so much better.

Looks like a conventional timing belt, but a short simplex chain linking the two camshafts, if I've got the right engine.
