Hi, and :welc: to the Forum. I cannot offer you any help myself, but if you wait for a while I feel certain somebody with knowledge of your car will be able to help.

I'll need your VIN to check the system you have and options, but generally the ambient lighting on this model has 2 functions:

Night Time Driving
Vehicle Location Function (with Fob) - which is part of the welcome function.

So the welcome lighting works when the doors are opened, (as you say) or when loating the vehicle at night using the fob.

When driving at night the ambient lighting level can be controlled or turned off - so you need to check the rheostat switch shown below in the picture. Holding it one way or the other (rocker switch) will turn it up or down, so make sure it has not been turned off completely, as the lighting level is memorised once you let go of the switch!

Are you driving at night or in the day?

The point I was trying to make is that the internal ambience lighting only works when driving at night, so we need to determine if there is even a fault first.

But we also still need the VIN to check any changes to the functionality based on model and build date.

It's possible the interior lighting unit has a fault - or there could be a wiring fault.

It' item 9 highlighted below:

Part 6554VK for reference. It's located behind the passenger dash

Some info:

The purpose of the interior lighting electronic control unit (light pack) is to control the lamps dedicated to the night-time ambient lighting and the welcome lighting:

Below the dashboard on the driver’s side and on the passenger’s side
  • On the dashboard
  • The door inserts
  • The roof
This unit also supplies the other lamps which make up the Light Pack option:
  • 2 storage trays
  • 2 reading lamps on the back of the front seats
  • 2 rear map reading lamps
  • 2 upper storage compartment lamps

That is part of the ambiance lighting.

According to version, the interior lighting electronic control unit (light pack) permits dual-function lighting (Night-time ambient lighting/welcome lighting) using the following components:
  • 2 Interior door lamps: Driver’s and passenger’s
  • 1 roof lamp
  • 4 interior opening control lamps: Driver, passenger, rear left and rear right
  • 1 below-dashboard lighting: Driver’s and passenger’s (Footwell)
  • 1 indirect lighting on the dashboard
The following functions are also associated with the light pack:
  • 2 storage tray lamps : Driver’s and passenger’s (With lighting as a hand approaches)
  • 2 reading lamps on the back of the seats: Driver’s and passenger’s
  • 2 upper storage compartment lamps: Driver’s and passenger’s
