Towbar wiring help
Hi again guys,
I have fitted a towbar to my Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDI and now have to do the wiring and i'm a tad confused.
It's a simple 7 pin setup with buzzer(Socket is pre-wired) and the instructions are not very clear...to me anyway.
After feeding the cable into the car, it tells me to trim 6 inches from outer cover to expose the wires that then connect to the wires in the left hand cluster but it also tells me to connect to a couple of wires on the right hand side, is there a wire that connects LH lights to RH ones beside the LH ones?
Looked about but cannot find any diagrams or colour chart for the car that will make life easier.
Vin is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] if it is any help.
Basically what i'm looking for is something that will help me match the colours of my towbar to the correct colours in the light cluster.
TIA
Tam
EDIT: These are the connection instructions, I have no problem joining the ones to the audible relay, it's the correct ones on the car loom that I need help with.

Re: Towbar wiring help
Apologies Marc, I'm an absolute banger! I just saw the thread further down the page and should have added to that.
I have just read that and still a bit unsure, going by that, and to make sure I'm understanding it, are all the wires I will need on the same plug, i.e the one for the LH cluster? Another thing that has confused the issue is I read that there were different colours for pre 30, 30 and 40 models....never heard of these model numbers.
Thanks

Re: Towbar wiring help
Those model numbers don’t relate to the Picasso, so don’t know what they refer to.
The light wiring pins and colours will be the same. Some of the wires from the left hand plug go to the tailgate cluster for the tail lights and the rear high level brake light.

Re: Towbar wiring help
Thanks again Marc, basically what I need to know is where to find The RH Tail light wire and the RH indicator wire. The others I can find from your post in the link above. That is why I asked if any RH side wires were to be found around the LH cluster. I thought I would have had to run a cable over from LH to RH to connect to these two.

Re: Towbar wiring help
I've duplicated the guide from the other post below:
I'm not sure what you can't understand?? The tail light wire on the rear right cluster is Pin 1 for power and on the left, Pin 1 the same - both use Pin 6 as the earth. There will be 2 wires on both left and right hand side as they also need to feed the tailgate tail lights.
The wires are in the plug with the other wires for the lighting cluster - below I have indicated right or left pins for each side of the vehicle. Am I missing something?.... I hae to assume you have the wiring plugs as you have located the other wires.
Brake Lights:
Right - Pin 4 YellowPower
Right - Pin 6 Green/ Yellow Earth
Left - Pin 4 Blue Power x 2 (1 to high level brake light, 1 to left brake light)
Left - Pin 6 Green / Yellow Earth
Rear Indicators:
Right - Pin 2 White, Power
Right - Pin 6 Green / Yellow Earth
Left - Pin 2 Yellow, Power
Left - Pin 6 Green / Yellow, Earth
Reversing Lights:
Right - Pin 3 Blue Power
Right - Pin 6 Green / Yellow Earth
Left - Pin 3 white Power
Left - Pin 6 Green / Yellow Earth
Tail Lights: (note that the rear wing tail light cluster has 2 wires in pin 1 below to supply the set of tail lights on the tailgate clusters) Therefore I am only including the wing mounted set below:
Right - Pin 1 Red Power (x2)
Right - Pin 6 Green / Yellow Earth
Left - Pin 1 Green Power (x2)
Left - Pin 6 Green / Yellow Earth

Re: Towbar wiring help
Thanks again!
I'll try and explain what I don't get and where I am now, I do understand the wiring(Colours)etc.
I have a black cable going into car from tow bar socket, which has 7 internal wires that will be exposed when I remove insulation.
Say I connect these wires to the correct ones for LH light functions(Tail, Brake, Indicator) at the left cluster, how and where do I then connect the ones for the RH light functions?
The instructions that I got tell me to cut 6 inches from the black insulation but, that wont allow me to connect some wires to the LH cluster and others over to the RH cluster.
That is why I asked if any RH cluster wires ran alongside the LH ones as I cant figure out how to get the towbar wiring to go to both clusters as I would have 6 inches max of wires.
Apologies that I haven't made myself clear and thank you so much for your patience.
In summary:
I have 7 wires but unsure how physically to route them between RH and LH clusters(Plugs) or are all the pins that cover both sides in the same plug?
Thanks

Re: Towbar wiring help
I can’t speak for your wiring kit, but would assume you’ll need to make up some wires to connect if they have not supplied them!
Most PSA models have a trailer fusebox and proper electrical wiring kit that has everything you need, but the Xsara Picasso does not have a dedicated kit unfortunately. I would go back to the supplier and ask them what the hell they have given you. Looks a bit half baked to me.
The wiring loom is routed to the left and right to feed the rear light clusters, so obviously both cannot be connected given the length of wire they have given you!

Re: Towbar wiring help
Thanks for all your time Marc, will take it to an autospark.
What I got was a socket prewired with the 7 core cable, on a mounting plate and the instructions above. I assumed the 7 core cable could be joined to the various wires within one cluster using scotchlocks provided.

Re: Towbar wiring help
Hi, I decided to revisit this thread and have a go.
After reading your colour coding again, it all made perfect sense and it was me who wasn't grasping it, I added a few extra wires, followed the post above also adding in the audible relay and now have it working perfectly. Marc, thank you so much for your patience and knowledge sharing and for saving me a few bob.

Re: Towbar wiring help
Hi guys. I am new to the forum. I own Citroen C5 2009 tourer 2.0 hdi 140hp Exclusive. I live in Norway. To go to the topic straight,I would appreciate any advice.
Recently went with a Mot,but couldnt pass.
I have an issue with a towbar electric. When connected to a trailer, all the lights are working properly, both, car & trailer, except for the braking lights on the trailer (car is fine). Wires and connections are checked, and all seems fine, except one (turn signals),but that was fixed (corrosion issue,Norwegian climate, right). Any idea where should I start from regarding trailer break lights issue? I am not really a mechanic guy,but with a help of a friend,we can maybe sort it out. Thank you all and wish you best!
