The picture for that seller you linked to is not for the earlier models - (470205, 470208, 470210) and agreed 470214 is the replacement part for these earlier models - but the even later part is 1612865480 which is the one you linked to with no cable.

470205 shown with release cable:

As for the plug - it is also shown on the current handbrake diagram which I've highlighted:

As for the manuals - it was still showing the manual release in the 2014 2015 model and was only dropped from the last manual in the last production run of late 2015-2016. So it has been a feature right up to 2015-2016.

But I would agree you are completely stuffed in the event you cannot release for whatever reason - so make sure you get your relay breakdown included in your roadside cover.

@ Steve:
There must be a way to hook up the manual release cable to the unit if you have the cable already now that you have removed the old box?

This is the one that has to be available to use in an emergency.
There was no release mechanism in the glovebox - ever. Only the electronic release and application handle and the manual release in the centre console.

Unreasonable and expensive complications to something that was perfectly adequate to begin with, then further unnecessary complications added.
I admit that it may be fun when it works but a world of expensive pain when anything goes wrong.

Thanks all for your information and advice.
To connect my existing release cable I’ll probably have to open up the EPB unit which will invalidate any warranty. Opening the casing on my failed unit was difficult and required heat, and I’d rather not put the new one through that so I may be stuffed.
It’s clearly a backward step by Citroen.
Coincidently, a colleague who’s previously bought 3 brand new Focus STs over the past few years told me yesterday that he wouldn’t buy the latest model because it has an electronic handbrake without an emergency override release. I stood up for Citroen because it has! Or I should say ‘had’ perhaps!!
As much as I like this car, this has been an eye opener and I probably won’t buy another Citroen.

This is a cracking forum though - thanks for your continuing help.

The part beginning 16 I linked to (as I presume that is one that Steve has been supplied with) was to show that the release cable was absent, and is the only one available now - it superseeded 470214 at RP 13874 (03/11/14). I saw that the blanking plug was shown on the list, but it's not on the actual diagram to show where it fits is what I was getting at.

This type of mech has been abandoned now, and all the latest ones have EPB motors on the calipers. I presume in the case of malfunction of these, you could just unscrew the motor and release the brake that way. I suspect they will become universal in a few years, and you won't be able to buy a car with a lever!

The Indie has confirmed that the release mechanism for the new part is within the unit. To manually deactivate the handbrake in future I have to climb under the car, remove the cover on the EPB that RichardW mentions, and pull the release insider the unit.
Strewth!!
If yours fails I suggest trying a repair by our new Polish friend first before buying a Citroen replacement part.

Thanks for the additional info Steve - it is worth knowing - although I cannot locate that info in any of the manuals so I suspect they do not expect the owners to crawl under and release it themselves.

Newer models do seem to have an emergency caliper release motor now - it's a sign of how things are going - automatic everything, so basically if your battery is bu**ered, so it the car.

It reminds back in the days of the all singing all dancing digital watches - timers for this, timers for that, altimeters, lights, alarms, radio, waterproof to a 1000M, tells the time in 40 languages, etc., etc., when asked what the 2 large suitcases attached to if were for, the owner replies - oh, they're the watch batteries...

The third cable is connected to the yellow release handle in the central console. That unhooks the release mechanism in the EPB. See ‘G’ below.

It is this cable (the manual emergency release) that was no longer fitted to models during the last year of production and is no longer it seems supplied with replacement EPB modules.

My car’s back together with the new handbrake unit and passed its MOT with no advisories so at least that’s positive and it’s ready for holiday duties next week.

The existing release cable wouldn’t fit the new EPB so has been cable-tied securely to save the faff of removing the glovebox to remove it completely.

The new EPB has a release cable, which will require crawling underneath to release. It’s item 10 on the following diagram. Removing a pull-off protective cover allows access to a ‘ring pull’ lever, and yanking this will release the handbrake. A backward step compared with pulling a cord in the glovebox!
8DDA1E9B-92BB-4B95-A452-44815FF26DFA.jpeg
When replacing the handbrake cables it could be seen that the nylon guide bush between the cable outer sheath and caliper on the nearside had broken up. This would have effectively shortened the outer cable forcing the inner to try and automatically adjust to compensate, and this may be the reason why the inner cable eventually broke. The nearside bush is also breaking up so as a temporary repair both have been reinforced using cable ties to hold them together awaiting delivery of replacements to my local dealer. They’ll be replaced as soon as they arrive. If you have a C5 with EPB I strongly recommend that you check yours and replace if necessary. They’re £1.40 each.

Thanks especially to Marc for his continuing help and to everyone who’s contributed to this thread. Hwyl!

OK. The misdirection is calling the rear of the centre console the glovebox. I understand now.

Definitely a retrograde step removing it though.

Da iawn Steve, diolch am update!

This is really useful information for us - especially that little nugget on the ring pull :-D Why they simply didn't continue with a simple hook up to the existing centre console release is beyond.
