Does anyone run a C5 X7 diesel estate?

Post by Peter.N. » 07 Aug 2019, 23:19

Hi Folks

I have started a new thread because no one has replied on this subject from my other one, or nobody has one and I find that hard to believe.

I am seriously considering buying the new shape model - if I can get some positive feedback about it. The last C5 I owned was a Mk1 and I wasn't very impressed with it, especially after running CX's for 10 years or so and XM's for 15 but it seems that the new 'German' one is a considerable improvement.

I need something with a soft ride but there doesn't seem to be such a thing now - except possibly the C5.

Can someone tell me what the ride is like and how reliable they are?

Thanks

Peter

The thing that seems the be a major flaw on the C5 X7 is the steering rack (some parts are made using a lesser quality metal than optimal). This needs to be replaced/refurbished. I believe that Stickyfingers is onto his third rack, as can bee seen in his signature;

From posts here, although the X7 has many enthusiasts (albeit with qualifications), the C5 II seems to report fewer issues. Experts will confirm, or not.

I'm beginning to wonder about the C5 11, if you've followed my tales about mine,(On my walk) and (Silly thought) you'll know that it had had an autobox failure when I bought it in the mid 60k miles, seemed to go fine until recently with proper servicing but now has an high pressure diesel pump failure at 80k .

The options for fixing it are a second hand pump 'gamble' or a refurb pump from a specialist for a little over £300 or new for over £600.

I'm gambling on the used one at £80, waiting now for it to arrive.

It's really a very nice car, comfortable and a decent ride but is it reliable, .................not sure.

Is that the 'facelift' model? If its a 2.0. 8 valve I have an HP pump here somewhere, I changed mine and needless to say it didn't cure it, turned out to be the pressure regulator on the back of the pump.

Another problem with the early ones is the tailgate struts, you don't seem to be able to get them, if you can they cost a fortune and you have to remove the headlining to fit them.

I wouldn't have an auto box partly for that reason, it would write the car off when, not if, it failed - also wastes fuel.

X7`s came with springs as well unless its the top end models (might as well get a pug in that case tbh)

Diesels : Engines, they came with the 1.6, 2 litre and 2.2 ; initially with the 110 bhp 1.6 , the 140 bhp 2 litre and the 173 bhp 2.2 twin turbo. Replace from 2010 onwards with the euro 5 163 bhp 2 litre and the 200 bhp 2.2 - the 1.6 was updated engine wise to the not so much turbo eating version, but kept the same power.

There is of course a 2x V6 version - the 2.7 and the 3 litre.

If you want the V6, the 3 litre is the better of the engines - more power and better economy and ofc lower tax.

Petrol, quite uncommon - 1.6 THP, 1.8 (never seen one), 2 litre (fairy common, for an uncommon version) and the not so in the uk 3 litre petrol v6.

As for suspension, pretty sure its the top 2 version? Exculsive and VTX?

I bought a new C5 estate in 2005 and kept it until 2014 when I changed to a used 2010 VTR+ Estate so it was on steel springs. I use it for towing and found the rear end sagged when going over speed humps. After replacing the jockey wheel twice, I got some MAD springs fitted and they have transformed the car. Frankly I don't find the ride much different to my previous C5. In the six years that I've owned it, it's been a reliable car averaging around 47mpg solo and 30 when towing. Running costs have been modest. Apart from annual servicing, the only replacement parts that have been required are new tyres, a new battery, new HP24 bulbs, two new tail-gate struts and the window lift mechanism for the front passenger door. Only yesterday did I also replace the n/side drop link since it was an advisory on the last MOT. The o/side one will have to wait for another day since it was a pig of a job to replace.

Peter - you might want to have a look at the X7 poll that shows where the main component failures are, as reported by members here - this is in general and not particularly for the estate.

It's a 2.0 litre 16 valve hdi 136 Peter and I've taken the pump off and bench tested it so I'm pretty sure that's the problem (I hope) not sure if your pump would be the same

As for the tailgate struts you're correct they are expensive but I struck lucky with mine, an Ebay seller made a mistake in his listing and I bought a pair for £16.63 each including delivery, I thought he'd back out when he saw what he'd done but he honoured the deal and upped the price in his next listing to £80 each.

Easy enough to fit though, the headlining isn't too much of a problem it's fixed up at the rear with double sided adhesive tape.

Like all the modern cars you need to be a bit of a contortionist to work on them.

Peter, I've edited this thread title as from your first post it would indicate you are talking about a C5 X7 ("German one") and there are posts here going on about a MK II facellift Estate which is going to confuse other potential contributors.

So please can we keep this on topic as it is the C5 X7 MK III Peter it talking about. :?
