C15 wikipedia entry

Post by Wookey »

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citro%C3%ABn_C15

I see that the C15 Wikipedia entry is very good and accurate in numerous details (some of which I had forgotten). However it also says that the rear axle comes from both the BX and from the Peugeot 305. Which is it (or are they in fact both the same too?). I see from that the 305 estate/van rear axle does look awfully like the C15 rear axle and is clearly where the design came from. It may indeed be identical. I've failed to find a pic of a BX rear axle, and whilst I've done some work on a BX, I never looked at the rear axle properly so don't know if it is in fact the same. Looking around online has not made me any the wiser either.

I thought this forum was likely to have the relevant expertise to get this right :-)

There's no data available with Citroen online now for these ol models, but I managed to find this site with some technical drawings - which contain some of the axles for the BX if it helps:

https://sites.google.com/site/cwdegier/bxtechdraw2

Clicking on any of them creates a large detailed image.

Hmm. So the BX rear axle basic layout is very similar to the C15, but of course it uses the hydromatic stuff. Does that mean it must be different, or could that just be a different shock fitted in the same metalwork? Inconclusive so far.

I'd always understood that the C15 is a bit of a parts-bin special - AND more Pug than Citroen, the front being 205 & the back 305 estate but pretty sure the 1/2-wet C15's that have been built used BX axles. All this suggests that any differences are minor & they are interchangeable (certainly hope so, as when the time comes I want the benefit of 4-wheel discs :) )

The front of a C15 is a Visa (not a 205) minus the exotic 'tumbler' lights control for some more conventional stalks. I know because I had a (petrol) visa as well as a diesel C15. (originally bought for spares for the van but actually ran as quite a good car for 8 years). Wikipedia gets that right.

Only superficially (& later Visas had conventional Citroen swtchgear) but those plastic eyebrows round the front wheel arches are to accommodate the wider track of the 205 underpinnings/drive train.

Ah, OK. Fair enough. So visa metalwork with 205 suspension components.

Haynes includes good drawings for BX rear axles; maybe the C15 book would allow a comparison.

Yup, that's a fair summary (just wish I'd known as much when I needed a hub carrier, as I'm sure a 205 one would've been easier to find) but the brakes seem to be Visa GTi, rather than 205.

My livre de mensonges is down in Deb'n (make more sense if it lived in the van, really) so might have a look at that, next weekend - then maybe look out for el cheapo 305 one.
