c5 x7 fault codes

Post by KennyW »

Hi All,

On my drive to France last week the engine management came on, this happened when accelerating away from the toll gates. There was obvious loss of power or anything else but the cruise control and A/C was not working.

Once back home my laptop for diagbox played up but I eventually got the following codes

P1445 Additive adding ---- The quantity of additive injected into PEF has exceeded the max threshold. PEF must changed.

along with P1496, P1497 P149C Variable resistance turbocharger

P0234 Charge Pressure regulation

I suspect they are related.

Hi Kenny I can't locate your VIN, so if you can provide that I can look into the specific codes for your engine.

Ok, so basically P1445 is telling you that the filter is at the limits of the unburned Cerine that remains in the particle filter.

Additive injected into the fuel system over time to lower the combustion temperature for burning of the particulate matter has a downside. It contains Cerine which contains elements that cannot be burned off and these remain in the particle filter, leading to its eventual blockage. The engine ECU records the amount of additive injected since the car left the factory (and whenever you refill it when resetting the additive counter to zero). This is recorded in grammes. A weight - to mileage table is used to estimate the amount of Cerine dumped into the filter based on distance travelled. So you have probably reached the upper limit. How many miles have you done?

Here are the faults codes and likely suspects:
Fault code P1496
After sales description of the fault codeVariable geometry turbocharger : Position incorrect in relation to the requirement (Too much turbocharging pressure)
Description of the diagnosticsThe position measured is less than the reference by more than 30 % for 5 seconds

Suspect areasTurbocharger: Variable geometry closed
Turbocharger solenoid valve: Failure of the solenoid valve; Electrical harness
Position indicator of the turbocharger: Electrical harness
Vacuum circuit: Blockage
Fault code P1497
After sales description of the fault codeVariable geometry turbocharger : Position incorrect in relation to the requirement - Not enough turbocharging
Description of the diagnosticsThe position measured is greater than the reference by more than 30 % for 6 seconds
Conditions of activation of the diagnosticsEngine has been running for at least 6 s

Fault code P149C
After sales description of the fault codeVariable geometry turbocharger : Excessive drift on the last initialisations of the lower limit
Description of the diagnosticsDrift of less than -0,5 V or more than 0,5 V in the initialisation of the lower limit of the variable geometry of the turbocharger relative to the first initialisation
Drift of less than -0,3 V or more than 0,3 V in the initialisation of the lower limit of the variable geometry of the turbocharger relative to the last initialisation the previous time the network went to sleep (Power latch)
The fault immediately appears
Conditions of activation of the diagnosticsImmediately following the initialisation of the lower limit
Conditions of disappearance of the fault3 successive starts, allowing time for the network to go to sleep (Power latch)
Down-grade modes if fault present-

Suspect areasThe variable geometry of the turbocharger is locked
Turbocharger solenoid valve: Failure of the solenoid valve; Electrical harness
Position indicator of the turbocharger: Electrical harness
Vacuum circuit
Fault code P0234
After sales description of the fault codeBoost pressure regulation: Air pressure above the reference value
Description of the diagnosticsEngine speed between 2000 and 3000 rpm - Engine torque below 300 N.m

Marc,

Mileage approx. 151,000miles, top up additive approx. 18 months ago.

So, having PEF deep cleaned or replaced would help ?

This one has me scratching my head.

Aha! So recommended replacement of the particle filter on this engine is 120k miles Kenny.

So a deep clean (but be wary of the internals as the ceramics can crack if cleaning) may be a solution, then you will have to tell it that it has been replaced and again reset the additive counter after.

Well spoke to 3 companies who have the equipment to clean the dpf but they were not willing to just clean dpf without a checking for the faults and sorting the faults first.
2 did not give a price saying it would depend on the faults but on quoted £200 minimum.
So I replaced the cat/dpf which cost £410 and I'm going to reset the counter for fluid.
Where is the replacement exhaust 'button' hidden ?

Yes, you will need to go into the engine ECU, then repair menu and there should be a section in there for the particle filter - and again somewhere to tell it you have replaced it. Must do that so it can zero out the soot loading back to 0 Gms.

I also note that there was an engine ECU software update Kenny from RPO 13512. Your RPO is 12296. So at some point when the wallet has recovered, it might be worth swinging by the dealer and asking them to update the engine ECU software as you have had the DPF replaced.

You can check your software in the engine ECU - there should be a section giving you the current version - the table below is the updated version:
