Car lost power accelerating then engine stopped. It won't start

Post by KeithJ » 29 May 2019, 22:52

Hi, I,m hoping some of you lovely people can help me.

I have a Grand Picasso 2.0 litre HDI Diesel. 2007 with electronic gearbox.

I had put some diesel in at Asda and I drove about a mile accelerating uphill, the power dropped off and the car went down through the gears. I got to the side of the road and the engine stopped. It won't restart.

Green flag put their OBD on the car and it said Camshaft position sensor was faulty. I replaced that and cleared the error. It came back. I cleared the error again and it has gone.

I have a number of other errors though on Diagbox.

In BSI

F000 Fault engine wiring housing eCU mute on CAN

C99B Engine fusebox fault in air pump control circuit

In Engine relay

F000 Engine fusebox not communicating with CAN fault

C99B Injection of air to exhaust pump control

In Gearbox

P0868 Oilo pressure defect fault

P0562 ECU supply fault + permanent

U1213 Fault in information transmitted by ABS/ESP or FSE (Electronic parking brake ECU)

U0415 Fault in information transmitted by ABS/ESP or FSE (Electronic parking brake ECU)

I also have a handbrake faulty warning which has intermittently happened before.

I did have a message about ECU not receiving wake up command but that has now gone.

At first I suspected possible fuel contamination but I can't detect anything (I definitely put diesel in and have the receipt to prove it). The fuel gague was on two bars so it wasn't sucking the tank dry.

I have checked the wiring harness behind the battery and found no broken wires but did chop out a corroded section and made it good (this was a twisted pair of fairly thin red and white wires)

I understand that the fusebox can be problematic under the bonnet. Is this a likely cause?

I think some of the first faults may have been apparent by low battery voltage after I tried to start it as they have cleared now it has had a charge. Could a faulty battery also be the problem or part of it if the voltage drops too low.

I'm getting desperate now.

If anyone has had experience of this type of situation before and can offer soime pointers in the right direction, I would be most grateful.

Thanks everyone.

Engine cut out & wont restart with a cam sensor error that comes back? My first thoughts here are broken/jumped timing belt.
Might be worth pulling the timing cover back to check the timing belt is still in tact.

Pop up your VIN so I can check the Wiring Diagrams out

Thanks Wheeler. The cam sensor error came back once but disappeared when cleared a second time on Diagbox. Green flag man looked and said Timing belt was not broken but it is possible it has jumped.

Hi Marc,

My VIN is: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

If you've got diagbox, then ignore the errors for a moment. Can you connect to the engine ECU? If you crank the engine when looking at live data what does it say? Does it shown cam/crank synch? Does it show the engine going round (say 180 rpm on the starter)? Are you getting fuel pressure? On these the HP fuel pump is driven direct off the end of the camshaft - there have been a few where the dog on the end of the cam has sheared off resulting in no fuel pressure...

I will have a look at that. I have only really used Diagbox to discover error codes and clear them so I will have to do a bit of research as to the procedure to give you what you want. I'm sorry to sound such an amateur.

I would sort out the handbrake issue first, are the brake lights always on?? volo v70 issues due to faulty brake light switch confusing the ecu, so would not start.......

Don't worry, we're all amateurs- with varying degrees of enthusiasm!!

If you connect diagbox, let it go through the scan then click on the engine ECU, there should be a section for Standard Parameters. In here you can see the various data the ECU is seeing. The ones you want will be in fuel system or something. Once you get them up on the screen, crank the engine and see what the numbers are saying.

I have tried to do as requested but when I crank the engine to read parameters I get a communication error with the diagbox which isn't helpful.

I have managed to establish that the crankshaft and camshaft are in sync according to parameters and that fuel pressure increases on cranking but sadly that's all I have managed so far. It's been one of those days.

I have been unable to get a definitive pressure reading for fuel

If its similar to a pug 306, can you hear the tank pump working, it works for a few seconds when the ign is turned on then stops ( as the engine has not been started ) but when engine running the pump works all the time.

Again pug 306 the brown double relay is a possible, and a fuel filter being blocked/restricted.......

you have quite a faults list so start with the common ones, and the handbrake switch.....

low battery voltage, on a fully charged battery whats the voltage across the battery on cranking, and how are the earths?

I know how you feel but you have to rule things in or out, starting with the simple stuff.

You said you found a corroded twisted pair of wires? to one wheel abs sensor?? how many wires go to an abs sensor on yours, 2 or 3??

He doesn’t have an in-tank fuel pump, just a gauge sender unit in the tank on these.

Twisted pair wires indicate a data network, so likely these are CAN wires.

Hello people, sorry for the delay in replying, work, illness and a still broken car have all been taking my time.

Basically no fuel is pumping. Fuel comes out of the inlet pipe to the filter when you squeeze the rubber bulb but not when you crank the engine.

Timing belt is not broken and even if it had jumped, (which I don't suspect) I understand that these pumps don't need timing.

Give me a break states that there is no in tank fuel pump. Can anyone confirm this please (not that I doubt his word) it's just that I've seen C4 Grand Picasso replacement in tank fuel pumps for sale.

Some fuel parameter details are:

Engine speed: 192

Cam' Crank synchronised: Yes

Reference fuel pressure: 290

measured fuel pressure: 118

Pressure regulator OCR: 22

Flow regulator OCR: 33

I will post any further details later if you need them as I'm off to work.

It has a new camshaft sensor, Brake pedal switch and Battery in the last few days BTW.

All the best

Keith

The whole point of having your VIN is to confirm what I've already said - I'm not in the habit of guessing - you don't have an in tank fuel pump - only an in-tank gauge and if you need further proof look at the diagram lifted from your VIN and see item 2 and the description:
