Citroen C5 X7 mk3 rear parking camera

Post by Y Cymro »

Thinking that this model was designed over 10 years ago and how the reversing camera image is quite poor in the dark I’m wondering if it’s possible to replace the camera with a newer one with an updated sensor that will be more sensitive in low light conditions.
After market cameras tend to have RCA/phono plugs and I’m wondering what connection is used on the OEM camera to see if it’s possible to easily replace it.

That's something there is very little on in the way of technical info from PSA. The wiring has to match one of the several Video pinouts at the back of the RT6. The Citroen Camera plugs directly into a socket as can be seen on the diagram, so I suspect it would be a matter of trying it and see - here are the original parts and price for a replacement in case it goes toes up!

Brilliant, thanks Marc, I’ll let you know how it goes.
Out of interest, is the part number for cameras on the latest X7s with a touchscreen the same as my 2013 car? I’m wondering if later cars have better ones?

Let me check.....

Ok, so the original camera was part number: 98 040 403 XT

The replacement camera was the one I quoted in my last post: 98 135 828 XT (as I always quote the latest superseded part numbers) for enquiries.

However the actual RT6 units may have differed on later models as there are quite a few variants. But Even for the models with SMEG Touchscreens, the camera part number is the same. :)

The camera input into the head unit is just a standard RCA connection video signal and ground (like the yellow video connector) so in theory you could get any kind of camera you liked with that sort of output. I think the tailgate plug is power, video signal and ground (might be two ground pins, can't remember offhand). Be wary though a lot of the cheap ones on ebay are shocking or have permanent "helper lines" embedded in the image.

Can anyone help by telling me whether I need a PAL or NTSC camera to replace the standard one in my C5 X7? I’m aware that the UK and Europe uses PAL, whilst the far East uses NTSC.

I'm pretty sure it will be PAL. NTSC or 'Never Twice The Same Colour' as we used to call it in the trade was a dreadful system in the early days, I'm not sure that they still use it.

NTSC is still used in North America and some other countries - especially for DVD encoding - not such an issue these days for digital HD - but as for cameras I would go for PAL - but the graphics chip in the units will probably be able to handle it either way.

Thanks for replies.
I should have expanded my question to say that I’m aware that PAL is used in most of Europe whereas NTSC is used in the Far East. France uses SECAM though I haven’t come across any car camera systems using this. So a French car built and sold in Europe with a reverse camera probably made in the Far East could be any one of those! If I purchase a replacement camera from eBay it will probably be Chinese and quite probably NTSC.
Equally, I seem to remember reading an article when LCD TVs and digital tuners were introduced stating it no longer mattered which standard was used as the system could display them all, but I’m trying to make sure I buy the most compatible one for my car.

Dear colleagues,

is there anyone who changed the original rear view camera on C5 X7 (mk3) for the newest one 98 135 828 XT? Is there anyone who solved the poor image quality at low light conditions by any other camera? The current price of about 200 euros is not that cheap :-)

How to remove the old camera from the tail door? From the outside or from inside of the car?

Thak you for any tipps & tricks!

Hey Y Cymro,

I wonder is this rear parking camera is a plug and play kinda thing? My C5 is made in 2010 and I'm trying to find out if I take out camera from a newer C5 and install on mine, would I work or not? And what do I need to do to get a reverse camera working on my Citroën?

Thanks ,)

Not unless it was standard equipment to start with. You need a compatible telematics Unit like the RT6 with camera option (not even all RT6 units have the hardware to support cameras), and the wiring harness. Without that there's no point.
