That doesn’t sound too good. Usually they restart when they get too hot, and sometimes the audio volume will first decrease to reduce heat generated by the internal amplifier.

If the unit has been running for some time, leave it to cool off (the fan may continue to operate for a while after the engine is switched off). Having the A/C on cold may help cool the unit quicker.

Do you use the Jukebox for music by any chance?

That can also generate additional hard drive activity and heat. I use the SD card slot and have hundreds and hundreds of MP3 files on it, which is far better for the system.

Have you checked to see if the internal fan is working?

It may be a motherboard issue of course, but try the firmware update after the temperature has dropped.

Hi GiveMeABreak/ Marc,

I´ve got here a problem on the NG4 of my RCZ and i need your opinion, if you can. On the radio LCD it appears a message says: "System check in progress - Please wait and do not switch off the engine for 25 min"
It stays like that forever.
I tested de 1+2+3 and 1+3+5 buttons but nothing. Sometimes the radio shuts down and turn on again but the message are always there.
Do you have any aidea what could be? It´s a new one?

When you say it’s a new one, do you mean you have replaced the head unit?

It can be several things. It needs to be coded to the vehicle if it was from another vehicle.

Or it could be a corrupt hard drive. Best to get the latest firmware on USB and insert that into the USB port and see if it will correct the errors.

Lastly it may be an internal fault with the head unit.

Try the firmware first and see if it will reinstall from it, but it may take nearly an hour to do so make sure the car in running.

Thanks for your help.
I asked if i need to replace for a new one because everyone points to replace the head unit..
But i never replaced.
I have a fat32 usb stick with the ng4-n42c unzipped.
Just insert it on the aux usb input and turn on the car and the radio? It will appear any kind of message?

I´ve googled an HDD that probably fits there. How can install a new image and where can i download it, to put it on the new hdd (if the old one have problems of corse)

Once you fit the new hard drive insert the firmware on the USB and start the car.

ALWAYS disconnect the car battery before disconnecting the NG4 connections or you can brick your unit or the screen.

I saw a couple of videos of some guys installing the fw but they can boot and see the peugeot logo. And they have the option to choose if they want to install it.
I only have that stuck menu. But i will test the usb key tomorrow.
If i change the HDD and install the new fw, this will only format and install the fw or will delete other stuff like GPS maps etc..?

Thanks

1) If the HDD that you buy is just formatted / blank and you install the HDD, then insert the Firmware USB, then it will install the operating system and create the partitions used by the system.
You will still have to configure the NG4 to the correct parameters for your vehicle (Citroen or Peugeot logo, VIN and other settings such as the radio frequencies, language and other options. You will also lose all your existing data, because the 4 partitions are created from scratch if they do not exist.

As it stands your existing system is not working so you can more or less forget everything on the HDD anyway.... even if you can boot off the firmware to fix it, it could overwrite everything.

Hello,
For a few days now my ng4 system of my C5 has not started up the screen works because I have a small glow but nothing no logo and the system reboots every 2 to 3 minutes. From time to time the display may light up for a few seconds on the radio station selection picture, then turn off and restart. What is the problem with the HS hard drive? Other information at each start I hear the read head of the turned hard drive.
Thank you in advance for the answers.

Hi

It sounds like the Head Unit. You could try and reinstall the firmware from a USB, but if it has started rebooting frequently like that, then it may need a repair. It’s really hard to diagnose here as it could be several things.

Diagbox can be used to interrogate the NG4 and if there are any error codes, pop them up and I might be able to provide some further help.

There can be occasions where the onboard chips get corrupted and the software needs to be reinstalled (often referred to as being ‘reanimated’). This requires specialist tools to do though.

Good evening,
I've just purchased a 2010 5008 with the NG4 unit, the unit was disconnected apparently because it was causing a battery drain. I've reconnected the unit to see what's going on and the unit just clicks and the lights on it just blink. I'm hoping there is something that can be done but I dont hold out much hope. Any advice please. Many thanks jon

It is essential that when these units are connected up or disconnected, that ideally the battery is disconnected first following the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure. But importantly, always ensure that the quadlock connector is removed first and reattached last when removing the unit.

I would suggest you follow the procedure above in any case so that the BSI can reinitialise and hopefully pick up the NG4 afterwards.

@GiveMeABreak

Good evening, I tried to replace in my RT5 the HDD with a SSD, which costs me 580 EUR net to get the device back on track. Unfortunately I didn't know about this thread before...

Now - my HDD is running without errors. I do have an image already of the drive at a safe place. I'm a linux user therefore I created the image with the linux disk dump (better know as dd, or data-destroyer if used in a wrong way) tool, using AFAIK the correct syntax, means i.e. dd if=/dev/sdX of=myimage.dd conv=sync status=progress. This should ensure to copy *every* sector of the HDD. It'll be very easy to work the image with dd on a cf-card. So, no need for me to play with the firmware CD or an USB stick. As far as I see on the HDD's there's a 8 MB cache (buffer) on the disks. I presume the OS knows about the cache and use it also. How will this issue work together with a cf-card? I'm not the hardware specialist...

Are there any experiances with a RT5? Is it worth to try? Thanks for your opinion.

Best regards and stay healthy,
stefan

Hi Stefan

Be aware that using an SSD will likely cause problems shortly - if it is a SATA SSD. The Automotive HDDs used in these Head Units are PATA / IDE based and therefore use the ATA command set. They cannot use the SATA native TRIM functions of SSDs, so you may find out that the performance will gradually crawl to a halt as the HDD fills up. That's the reason why a CF Card is used as it maintains perfect compatibility with the HDD as they use the same ATA command set.
